The Role

A Lead Data Scientist develops tools to collect, clean, analyze and manage the data used by strategic areas of the business. Employs techniques and theories drawn from mathematics, statistics, from the subdomains of machine learning, classification, cluster analysis, and data mining. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to understand complex business problems, build statistical models, and create predictive tools.

The Main Responsibilities

  • Work as a member of a Data Science & Analytics team in Field Operations to help transform the business by identifying opportunities for operational efficiencies across the Enterprise. This will include:

  • Clearly communicating methods and conclusions with simple language and innovative visualizations to business partners and leadership

  • Working effectively on a team and as a self-driven individual contributor who researches and develops cutting edge and effective solutions for the business

  • Understands and demonstrates common business and virtual etiquette

  • Clearly articulate ideas, potential solutions and problem-solving approaches to the appropriate audience and stakeholders

  • Providing expertise in analyzing and visualizing large, complex, and unique data sets

  • Uses descriptive statistics and summaries to provide the basis for hypothesis generation

  • Articulates their expertise to the team and encourages junior members to advance their skills

  • Creating new insights that will drive business growth and profitability in the short and long term

  • Expert on organizational business issues and using data science methods to address them

  • Has clear understanding of business goals, KPIs, gaps, strategic roadmaps

  • Has clear understanding of Lumen internal organizations, culture, approaches, techniques, and vernacular

  • Takes the time to help junior team members gain understanding of business issues, objectives, and the Lumen organization

  • Deploying analytics solutions in a continuous integration environment incorporating version control, build servers, and test servers.

  • Understands and educate others on how to use cloud-based AI development tools

  • Follows all Lumen code/API/Application requirements

  • Only uses Lumen approved code repositories to store latest versions of all code

  • Ensures that all code developed is secure and accessible to other developers, team members, and business partners, as appropriate

  • Is a SME on Lumen Data Science tools, applications, and policies

  • Multitasking to manage multiple requests with on-time delivery

  • The display of strong analytical thinking and skills to rapidly adopt new methods, tools and programming languages, as needed

What We Look For in a Candidate

Required:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Operations Research, Process Control Engineering, Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Analytics, or Economics

  • 10+ years of experience in data analysis or related field

  • Experience with statistical and machine learning algorithms for predictive modeling, including real-time analysis of telemetry data

  • Expert SQL skills and experience with relational databases

  • Experience with non-relational database

  • Programming experience with Python and one or more analytics development platforms, such as: R, SAS, Scala, Java, Julia

  • Familiarity with BI reporting tools (such as Tableau, Qlik Sense, Power BI)

Preferred:

  • PhD degree in Operations Research or Process Control Engineering

  • 10+ years of experience in data analysis and predictive modeling using time series data

  • Past success in extracurricular math/science activities or competitions is highly regarded

  • Familiarity with cloud-based data and analytics platforms (such as Azure, AWS, Google)

Education

  • Masters or above in Operations Research, Process Control Engineering, Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Analytics, or Economics

This position is eligible for either short-term incentives or sales compensation. Director and VP positions also are eligible for long-term incentive.
