Job Description:


The Environmental Specialist/Engineer contributes to a range of activities to deliver client products for the planning and delivery of all modes of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) projects. Conducts environmental assessments and investigations of proposed navigational aid projects, identifies the potential environmental effects of FAA systems, corridors and projects, and develops measures to avoid or mitigate environmental impacts. Collects salient information and data of existing and future environmental conditions of project settings.


Prepares, reviews, and processes environmental documents mandated by federal, state and local laws and regulations and, as a team member, assesses the consequences to the environment. Prepares National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents to assess the environmental effects of FAA proposed actions prior to making decisions. Coordinates with FAA Environmental Occupational Safety and Health (EOSH) personnel to reduce FAA environmental liabilities. Reviews FAA Orders and standard guidance materials to ensure environmental compliance and document consistency.

Identifies data needs and subsequently gathers information as part of an environmental inventory to assess existing social and natural environmental systems. Travels to FAA facilities to perform site surveys/reconnaissance to determine potential environmental impacts and develop scopes of works. Summarizes findings and translates information into draft and subsequently final reports for submission to FAA client.

Assists in the development of and participates in preparation of notices and other public involvement materials. May help conduct public meetings, develop subsequent response to comments, and assist in other aspects of compiling the environmental and administrative record.

Identifies environmental research needs and performs analysis to complete work required by the environmental team as part of the project delivery process. Develops and completes spreadsheets to capture, organize and present complex analytical data.

Helps track permit conditions and other environmental commitments through development of later project phases, including preparation of plans, specifications and estimates.

Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.


4-year degree in Environmental Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies or related field and at least 3 years of related work experience, specifically in the NEPA process and/or analyzing environmental data. Experience completing environmental assessments and/or negative declarations, including developing mitigation options to avoid environmental impacts.


Working knowledge of environmental practices and procedures. Proficiency in utilizing PC and various software packages typically used in environmental assignments is required. Ability to work effectively with others internally as an interdisciplinary team member. Ability to apply NEPA and other state and federal laws, regulations and guidelines relating to the environment. Strong research, writing, and analytical skills are a requisite.
