Newell Brands Associate Manager, Customer Planning- Cutlery/Bakeware in Atlanta, Georgia

Position Title:  Associate Manager, Customer Planning

*Location: *  Atlanta, GA, Huntersville, NC, Fishers, IL

Reports to:  Sr. Manager, Customer Planning

The Associate Manager, Customer Planning will work closely with cross functional teams in the development of Food storage category stories, focusing on driving overall category growth. Leveraging syndicated data, shopper and consumer insights, category and industry trends, will develop comprehensive category strategies focused around shopper centricity, enabling greater sell-thru and market share gains. This position works as a strategic thought leader, imparting knowledge of the category to drive profitable business results. In addition to Food storage business, Manager will be responsible for Retail strategy in all channels. Duties and responsibilities include the following:  


Brand Champion:

*Basic Category Understanding *

  • Develop sub-category knowledge to become subject matter expert. Begin to provide thought leadership to internal constituents as well as external customers with leadership direction.

  • Working knowledge of available syndicated and household panel data for sub-category to use in the development of strategies and tactics

  • Understand & monitor competitive landscape in sub-category

Data Analytics & Shopper Understanding

  • Working knowledge of data resources & analytical skills to identify +/- to POS/share - able to identify causal and initial action plan

  • Develop understanding of sub-category purchase drivers, trip missions, shopper need states, etc.

  • Basic understanding of Shopper insights & data sources (e.g. Shopper Research, POS, loyalty card information, registry, etc.)

  • Use knowledge of shopper and consumer to assist in development of category assortments, flows, adjacencies, cross merch opportunities, etc.

  • Basic understanding of Path to Purchase - B&M & Online

*Multi-channel Experience *

  • Working knowledge of customer/channel insights and perspective of the various channel dynamics on assigned categories

  • Monitor channel shifting and the associated trends reflected in the marketplace & develop action plan

  • Identify potential channel conflicts, seeking leadership guidance

*Manage Innovation Pipeline *

  • Participate in Brand Development discussions to manage pipeline of innovation, bringing both a customer and consumer perspective to the development process

  • Use knowledge of customer and consumer to recommend optimal assortments and channel exclusives  

  • Omni-channel approach - Build in-store and .com requirements for a successful go-to-market into launch development plans

  • Understand impacts of innovation to the sub-category P&L & own the impact to Customer P&L

Retail Strategy:

Customer selling presentations

  • Participate in Channel specific variation of annual GTM category selling story

  • Ensure Best in Class selling stories to achieve both brand and retailer objectives

  • Calculated size of prize opportunities and ability to link strategic goals to retailer goals/benefit

Annual Customer planning

  • Participate in the development of customer playbooks for ttl category – setting distribution/shelving/merchandising/promo goals

  • Maintain 18 month rolling Promotional calendar for assigned customer/channel responsibility

  • Develop customer specific promotional needs - items/prgm/display

Conduct ROI analysis of top 10 events for assigned customer/channel responsibility

Line review planning & oversight

  • Participate in line review process for strategic accounts

  • Develop Pricing/Promo guardrails to ensure profitability growth

  • Mix management

P&L Management

  • Responsible for channel P&L, trade funding & overall tracking of profit goals


  • Bachelor's degree (emphasis in business, marketing, finance or related field), advanced degree preferred

  • 2-3 years of experience working with a leading CPG company (Trade or Channel Marketing, Category Management).

  • Strategic thinking, self-starter with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with aggressive deadlines

  • Advanced analytical skills and computer software proficiency (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.)

  • Strong familiarity with syndicated data, measures and software (e.g. NPD, IRI, , etc.)

  • Must be able to travel 10-20% of the time.

    Additional Skills

  • Build strong sustainable business relationships at all levels and functions of the organization and with customers and customer teams

  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal
