About Our Opportunity

The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Laborer at Harrah's Cherokee Center Asheville within the Community & Regional Entertainment Facilities Department. The role of this position is to work on an event crew, maintenance crew or custodial crew in support of the exciting event schedule at the Harrah's Cherokee Center.

Pay Rate: $18.25 per hour

Work Schedule: Schedule is determined based on event schedule, and can vary depending on the event schedule. This position is temporary for up to 1000 hours in a year. Minimum of 24 hours per week.

Benefits: This position will NOT be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor participation in the retirement system.

This position will remain open until filled or until a sufficient number of applications are received.

Essential Duties and Responsibilites

This is an exciting opportunity to bring your love of events and attention to detail to a venue with no shortage of great acts. The ideal candidate will work to support event operations and ensure adherence to proper procedures and safety precautions.

Specific Duties include:

  • Provides routine custodial services.

  • Picks up debris and refuse.

  • Provides event support setting up tables, chairs and/or staging.

  • Provides weather related maintenance.

  • Responds to requests in a timely and effective manner.

  • Uses courteous mannerisms when addressing the public or clients.

    Supplemental Functions:

  • Performs other similar duties as required.

Education and Experience

Required Education & Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

    Preferred Requirements:

  • High School Diploma preferred but not required.

  • Custodian and/or event set-up experience is a plus!

    Licensing and Certifications:

  • Requires training in workplace safety and blood borne pathogens. Training provided by the employer.

    Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

    Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to read and understand basic workplace data, such as simple forms, tables, graphs, schedules, etc.

  • Ability to conduct basic research of existing, internal policies and procedures.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written form.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships as required by work assignments.

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret policy and procedural guidelines and to apply this understanding to tasks.

  • Ability to bring resources together to resolve a problem or provide a solution.

  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring.

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.

  • Ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well-established policies, procedures, and standards.

  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

    ADA Compliance:

  • Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and prolonged standing, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

  • Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

  • Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
