The City of Asheville invites applicants to the position of Asset Management GIS Intern.

About our opportunity:

The City of Asheville is seeking an intern to join our Public Works Department in our Asset Management Division. This intern will work alongside GIS staff to improve stormwater GIS data breadth and quality to support Public Works Asset Management decision-making and daily operations, while gaining experience and valuable learning opportunities in the field.

The intern will work hands-on in applied data entry/editing, in situ data collection, and web GIS project development and execution. The skills learned during this internship will be marketable for any emerging GIS professional. Work will be performed under the general supervision of the Asset Manager and GIS Coordinator.

Work Schedule:

5/15/2023 - 8/11/2023 - Dates are flexible, 12 weeks duration is preferred.

This position will work full time (37.5 hours per week)

8:30 - 5:00 Monday - Friday, on location in Asheville, NC.

Pay Rate: $17.00 per hour

This internship position will not be eligible for benefits, paid leave time (vacation, sick, holiday) nor participation in the retirement system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilites

The ideal candidate for this internship will be enthusiastic to learn new skills and take ownership of tasks assigned to them. They will also have a commitment to doing things correctly and have the gumption to utilize available resources and ask questions when something is unclear, incorrect, or when issues arise. We are seeking applicants with a positive attitude who will conduct themselves in a professional manner. In return, the intern will gain hands-on experience in the use of GIS programs, as well as the opportunity to see how data management is essential to enable the department run their operations smoothly and in real time.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform QA/QC work on stormwater GIS datasets including structures, pipes/lines, and management facilities.

  • Implement stormwater infrastructure data corrections gathered from field staff.

  • Update data schemas to support data collection efforts.

  • Digitize and report on curb infrastructure to support stormwater operations.

  • Develop and improve ArcGIS Online maps and resources.

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • Applicants must be a current college or university student pursuing a Geography/GIS degree, comparable degree, or related program.

  • Applicants shall have completed some existing coursework in GIS and, at a minimum, have an understanding of rudimentary cartographic and GIS concepts

  • Applicants will need to provide a current transcript of course work to be considered for this position (please upload as an attachment to your online application).

  • Familiarity with Esri’s suite of GIS products such as ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, etc.

  • Knowledge of enterprise geodatabase processes and concepts is preferred but not required.

  • Attention to detail and ability to scrutinize large amounts of data for accuracy and completeness, or the interest in growing these skills.

  • Will be enthusiastic to learn new skills and think critically

  • Must possess the ability to work in an office setting and use standard office equipment

  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and projects, as well as work collaboratively with peers.

Working Conditions

Physical Ability: Tasks may require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Some data collection field work may take place outside with proper PPE.
