Johnson Controls Site Safety Specialist / SSHO (Job number: 1087) in Arlington, Virginia

We are seeking a Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) to join our federal team in the Washington D.C. metro area, primarily supporting our teams based at the Fort McNair and Fort Myer military sites in Arlington.

Pay range: $85,000 - $105,000. Negotiable based on experience.Â

Benefits: Eligible for benefits on first day of employment

Vacation: 3 weeks of paid vacation, 5 sick days, 3 floating holidays, and 10 standard holidays per calendar year (6.5 weeks in total)

Travel: Limited. Primary work will be at Fort McNair and Fort Myer military sites in Arlington. May help support other sites locally at times. No overnight or out of town travel required.

As a Site Safety and Health Officer , you will:

  • At the local project level applies JCFS Safety programs, US Army Corps of Engineers Safety & Health Requirements, as well as state and federal laws for the inspection of equipment and working conditions to prevent accidents, fires and related hazardous events.

  • Leads all safety functions, including oversight of multiple assigned project levels and locations.

  • Responsible for the implementation of the Site/Task Specific Safety Program at location, including the creation of each task order required Site Specific Accident Prevention Plans (APP) & Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA).

  • Oversees and can authorize the procurement of project safety supplies and equipment, and is responsible for the implementation of the site safety training of JCFS direct employees and sub-contractor safety training.

  • Ensures internal employees and subcontractors understand and comply with all safety requirements. Conducts reviews to confirm compliance.

  • Designated on-site competent person and Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO), as defined by The Army Corps of Engineers EM 385-1-1.

  • Serve as the site Subject Matter Expert for crane lifts, lock out/tag out, fall protection, trenching, scaffolding, and confined space related work.

  • Responsible to enforce the safety directives per JCFS Safety Program, site-specific APPs and EM 385-1-1.

  • Conducts daily safety and health inspections; conducts mishap investigations and completes required reports; Maintains the OSHA form 300;

  • Maintains a safety and health deficiency tracking system that monitors outstanding deficiencies until resolution. Ensures sub-contractor compliance with safety and health requirements.

  • Occasional travel between sites being supported within the region. Additional travel for startup, training, etc. as needed.

  • Provides leadership & facilitates the Office Safety Committee at the local level.

  • Partners with the site leadership team.

  • Develops professional working relationships with government and subcontractor safety organizations.

  • Establishes initiatives to enhance the JCFS safety program.

  • Owns/Accountable for Safety Execution within the assigned project location.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

    Required Qualifications:

  • 30-hr OSHA Construction Safety Class within the past 5 years and demonstrated continuing Safety training thereafter (8 hour per year) or the ability to obtain OSHA 30 hour certification within first 30 days of employment.

  • Five (5) or more years of continuous experience in construction safety inspection and administration with similar large-scale projects.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft office software.

  • The ability to obtain and maintain required government security clearances and badges as required for the sites being supported. (This involves a background/character, criminal history, employment, and credit check).

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated understanding of OSHA, USACE safety regulations (EM-385-1-1), NAVFAC, ANSI, NFPA 70-E, and other State and Federal regulatory standards.

  • Experience in safety program implementation and oversight, and/or facilities operations and maintenance

  • Competent Person level trainer for Fall Protection/Electrical/Confined Space/Asbestos, etc.

  • Demonstrates commitment to safety principles and safe work practices; adherence to established standards and procedures. Accepts responsibility for own safety as well as that of others.

  • Able to recognize hazards and identify controls to mitigate or eliminate those hazards

    Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Hygiene or related field; or equivalent experience.

  • OSHA 500 or 510 – Trainer course for construction.

  • EM-385-1-1 40 hour Training Course.
