Job Summary

The McNair Scholars Program (MSN) Director will provide leadership and vision to the McNair Scholars Program and be responsible for recruiting students into the program, ensuring that the program meets enrollment and success metrics, and ensuring that the program supports students’ success in pursuing graduate education. The purpose of the program is to provide research experience, academic, career, and graduate school preparation and guidance to students who are low-income, first generation, or are underrepresented in doctoral programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and coordinate the implementation of an annual recruitment plan for participants and approve all program participants.

  • Manages recruitment, applications, administration and review processes of student awards and scholarships, advising, and retention of McNair Scholars student participants.

  • This includes managing/participating in interviews, on-boarding processes, and regular meetings with student participants, documenting academic progress, financial/student aid situations graduate/career plans, and providing guidance leading to Ph. D programs.

  • Plan and participate in graduate program visitations and graduate school tours.

  • Interpret and apply all applicable campus, state, and federal regulations which impact the program fiscally and programmatically.

  • Prepares internal and external reports needed for program assessment Compile data, write, and submit annual reports documenting program outcomes and accomplishments for U.S. Department of Education, including the Annual Performance Report.

  • Assist and provide input to the OUR director with the MSN budget, ensuring disbursements are within federal and university guidelines.

  • In collaboration with the OUR Director, lead the development, planning, coordination and execution of the McNair undergraduate research events, seminars, conferences, and presentations including events to promote McNair undergraduate research, professional development, learning communities, and advising conducted by the office.

  • Serve as liaison with faculty and graduate programs to ensure their complete understanding of the purpose of the Program and to garner their support and cooperation; coordinate the recruitment of faculty to serve as research mentors for participation in program.

  • Provide holistic and culturally fluent advising, coaching, and advocacy for McNair participants that supports their success in coursework, research, scholarly activities, and graduate school; ensure a sense of belonging and a strengths-based mindset for each participant through education opportunities.

  • Collaborates with the OUR director in MSP grant writing and other scholarly activities geared toward programming support for the McNair Scholars program.

  • In collaboration with the OUR Director, lead the professional development and training for MSN staff.

  • Performs other duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree with three (3) years of professional experience managing diverse and complex programs in education and/or equivalent relevant experience.

  • Experience supervising professional staff.

  • Experience with assessment, design, and implementation of programmatic and organization-wide change efforts.

  • Experience managing budgets and providing fiscal oversight.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred experience in the preparation and oversight of federally sponsored grants.

  • Experience managing diverse and complex programs in higher education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated leadership.

  • Ability to analyze financial information to ensure operations are within budget (budget oversight and management).

  • Ability to implement student success best practices and/or retention initiatives in a university setting.

  • Ability to understand administrative problems and solutions involved in operating retention and completion initiatives.

  • Ability to work effectively with faculty and staff.

  • Excellent written, communication, and collaboration skills

  • Comfort using instructional technology.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster an inclusive learning environment supportive of underrepresented, first-generation, and low-income people in the university and in their communities.

  • Ability to interpret and implement federal grant regulations and standards, and their relationship to instructional programs and student success initiatives.

  • Ability to develop varied study skills approaches and resources for undergraduate research, graduate school, and financial aid, assessment, and evaluation.
