Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in music industry studies, music media gaming, film and gaming composition, and related areas at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • Engage in focused and significant research/creative activity that leads to substantive scholarly impact in the candidate’s area of specialization.

  • Contribute to the growth and development of the Department of Music, the College of Liberal Arts, the University, and the profession through participation in committees, departmental activities, and other service.

  • Other duties may be assigned based on the candidate’s qualifications and the needs of the department.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in music, or a field directly related to Music Industry Studies.

  • Musical Proficiency: Knowledge of music scoring for various media including gaming and film; knowledge of music theory, composition, and performance; ability to analyze and interpret musical elements within the context of video games; excellent knowledge of the elements of sound design and various sound design software; knowledge of music scoring for media.

  • Technological Skills: Experience and proficiency in recording using digital audio workstation (DAW) and software tools used in music composition for games software ; experience in recording techniques.

  • Demonstrated record of excellence, or evidence for potential excellence, in teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

  • Demonstrated record of potential for substantial scholarly research/creative activity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry Engagement: Evidence of reputation at the national or international levels; experience or willingness to engage with game development studios, conferences, and industry events; knowledge of industry practices and requirements for music in gaming.

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Ability to collaborate with game developers, designers, and artists; strong communication skills to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams; flexibility to adapt musical compositions to fit the overall game design; willingness to adapt to evolving technologies and industry trends.

Department Information

Located in the College of Liberal Arts, the Department of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and enrolls over 360 music majors. Our 65 faculty members contribute to a robust creative and scholarly environment. The Department offers a Bachelor of Music degree with emphases in Performance, Music Education, Music Business, Music Audio Production, Theory, Composition, and Jazz Studies. The Department also offers a Bachelor of Arts in Music Industry Studies degree. The Masters of Music degree is offered in Music Education; Performance in voice and on all classical and jazz instruments, including conducting; Music Theory; and Jazz Composition. The Department also offers a graduate performance certificate. Opportunities abound at the University to collaborate with other strong researchers in a variety of fields.

College of Liberal Arts Information

In the College of Liberal Arts (CoLA), students receive an education centered on the cultivation of creativity, research, and analytical skills. CoLA is one of UTA’s most diverse academic units.
