The Michigan Medicine Office of Development raises an average of $200 million annually, which helps us to be a change agent of the world. The Office of Development supports an overall culture of flexibility with gift officers expected to be outside of their home offices meeting with donors, faculty or colleagues a minimum of three days each week.

Reporting directly to the Managing Director of Development, this position will oversee all philanthropic fundraising activity for the University of Michigan's nine basic science departments (https://medicine.umich.edu/dept/ebs/about-ebs) . This includes supervising the Assistant Director of Development, Basic Sciences position. The Senior Associate Director position is a pivotal role within Michigan Medicine's Office of Development with critical strategic responsibilities to cultivate and develop long term support of basic science research at Michigan.

Responsibilities*

Strategic Planning & Collaboration (35%)

  • Create a comprehensive plan that will drive development for the Basic Sciences and its affiliated units.

  • Meet regularly and liaise closely with basic science department chairs and associated faculty and staff to identify funding priorities and needs, creating development strategies that align.

  • Create an annual plan for fundraising by working closely in coordination and collaboration with chairs and directors, faculty and administrative officers.

  • Serve as a lead in identifying partnerships with clinical departments and gift officers to showcase basic science and clinical impact.

  • With the Assistant Director of Development, Basic Sciences, develop/build relationships with department leadership and faculty that will help tell/define the successes and impact of the department to share with donors and friends.

  • Collaborate with Corporate and Foundation Relations team members and leaders to identify strategic partnerships and/or opportunities for faculty to drive key priorities.

  • Compile and evaluate data on basic science stakeholders, identifying and prioritizing potential donors and prospects within specific regions to provide targeted contact lists for colleagues, facilitating outreach and engagement initiatives that strengthen ties and nurture support for basic sciences.

Donor & Prospect Management (50%)

  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of major gift and planned giving prospects, maintaining frequent contact with prospects, university leaders, and volunteers. Discovery work will play an important part of this goal.

  • Plan systematic, appropriate and effective solicitation strategies for the basic science and planned gift prospects. Typical gift portfolio of gifts is $50,000 to $1,000,000 or more.

  • Utilize metric driven data to develop, drive and execute strategies to identify, cultivate and solicit major support for the basic sciences.

  • Plan consistent and appropriate contact, facilitate leadership contact, solicit and ensure effective stewardship of donors.

  • Oversee the implementation of comprehensive, timebound, and innovative stewardship of each department's top donors.

  • Provide supervision and direction to the Assistant Director of Development to increase overall support for the Basic Sciences

Community Building (15%)

  • Develop interdepartmental basic science alumni and donor/friends gatherings to identify high-capacity prospects, promote continuing departmental engagement, and prospect cultivation opportunities among alumni.

  • In collaboration with Development Communications and the Basic Science Departments, create an overarching campaign strategy in addition to individual department strategies and priorities. Additionally, create a plan to share broadly with prospects and current donors to advance future philanthropy donor and prospect base; providing examples of research success, bold advances, and new faculty hires as examples.

  • Cultivate a sense of community among alumni, communicating regularly about department and interdepartmental activities and achievements as well as the gains from philanthropic giving and grants.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • At least seven years of experience in fundraising, including prospect identification, cultivation and solicitation.

  • Strong writing and communications skills, with an ability to understand and convey the impact and potential impact of scientific research on medicine and health.

  • Knowledge, familiarity and comfort with science-related research themes found in the basic science arena.

  • Ability to exercise a high degree of sound judgment and diplomacy, with a commitment to confidentiality. A creative approach to fundraising and developing donor prospects will also be important.

  • Demonstrated success in raising capital, program support and endowment gifts.

  • Candidate will be required to have reliable internet service.

  • Periodic travel for donor engagement, conference attendance, etc.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Progressively responsible development experience in an academic health system setting or science/health foundation with a comprehensive development program.

  • Master's degree in science related area.

Work Locations

The onsite location for this position is an office suite at the 777 Building. This provides free, on-site parking for staff.

This position is a flexible, hybrid position. The Office of Development supports an overall culture of flexibility with gift officers expected to be outside of their home offices meeting with donors, faculty or colleagues a minimum of three days each week. While work arrangements are flexible, you must currently, or be willing to, reside within a daily commutable distance of the office. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on business needs.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
