Summary
The Research Lab Specialist Assoc position will support general lab operations for the Unity Lab, including animal breading and microsurgeries. We are seeking a highly organized and skilled Research Lab Specialist with a high-level of self-motivation and organization, along with the ability and willingness to acquire new skills. The candidate must be capable of working independently as well as in a team environment. The position will provide an opportunity to conduct independent research, and recognition for contributions with authorship on publications and opportunities for career development.

Responsibilities*
Leading experimental research (design, execution, data collection and processing), statistical analysis, presentation of data to the PI and team members. Developing new skills when required and seeking out experts.
Administrative work including orders, EHS, lab maintenance, etc. in coordination with the team members.
Train members in laboratory techniques and reviews results. Manages animal colony, follow-up and perform surgeries.
Manage the laboratory's IBC protocol to ensure safe usage of recombinant vectors.
Manage multiple IACUC protocols (involving rodents) and serve as the point of contact for biannual IACUC inspections.
Serve as the laboratory's safety officer, maintaining all required documentation for annual EHS inspections.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications*
This position requires a BS or MS, preferably in microbiology, molecular biology, bioengineering, chemistry, or a related discipline.
1 to 3 years of related experience.
Prior research experience with animal work, including:
Surgeries
Breeding
Microsurgeries
Necropsy
Experience with tissue processing and various techniques such as:
Immunohistochemistry/fluorescence
Confocal imaging
Demonstrated experience with general basic molecular and cellular biology techniques and immunological techniques; ex. mammalian tissue culture, protein production/purification, western blotting, isolation of DNA, RNA, qPCR and ELISA.
Must be a team player, demonstrating flexibility, positivity, and respectfulness.
Willingness to learn new techniques.
Ability to rapidly learn new techniques by seeking out the expertise of others and building collaborations.
Strong open communication skills with team members and the Principal Investigator (PI).
Demonstrates flexibility.
Excellent attendance record.
Desired Qualifications*
Previous knowledge and experience with U of M policies and procedures.
Experience with statistical analysis, including using software such as MS Excel, graphpad or R.
Experience drafting technical written reports.
Work Locations
The Biomedical Engineering Department operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work. This position will be classified as an ON-SITE position within the Michigan Engineering STARR classification matrix which means working on campus 5 days per week. **Note: This is a one year term-limited position with the possibility of extension based on need and funding.
