What You'll Do
Report to the Supervisor for Mechanical & Electrical Engineering AEC's Architecture & Engineering department.
Provide drawing and specification documentation for mechanical and plumbing systems for self-performed design. Layout equipment and systems, perform engineering calculations, and select equipment and devices with support from lead engineers or the mechanical engineering manager. Write standards and technical specifications. Coordinate the design with all disciplines and other U-M partners.
Perform field surveys in mechanical, electrical, and other building spaces to document existing mechanical systems and to understand building interferences. You will assess condition and performance of systems and components. Develop recommendations for alterations to buildings and infrastructure based on the findings of field surveys and evaluations.
Meet and communicate with facility managers, professors, researchers, and other partners to develop project goals. Consult with the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Manager and other office leadership to determine resource allocation needs and to provide project updates. Assist and direct drafters to accomplish project tasks and supporting office priorities.
Review designs with appropriate agencies to ensure compliance with codes and regulations. Administer RFIs and construction bulletins for design revisions. You will review and process shop drawings and help resolve construction issues.
Participate in or lead groups and initiatives, such as the development of new master details or specifications.

Required Qualifications*
A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
Completed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam, or registered as a State of Michigan Professional Engineer (PE).
Four or more years of progressively responsible experience in the design and construction of mechanical systems for higher education, commercial, or research type buildings.
Experience with multiple mechanical building systems (CHW and HHW, chillers, cooling towers, boilers, HVAC, hydronics, controls, plumbing, and fire protection).
Provide basic designs of offices, classrooms, and labs, from a senior engineer.
Experience with AutoCAD, Microstation, or Revit platforms and industry-standard mechanical design software.
Knowledge of Michigan Mechanical Code, Michigan Plumbing Code, International Fuel Gas Code, ASHRAE 90.1, and other related building codes.
