Responsibilities*

The Laboratory Technician can be assigned to perform one or more of the following functions, with a minimum of High School Degree and under supervision of a CLIA qualified General Supervisor*

Provide Clerical/Administrative Support

  1. Monitor call list, make critical value calls, and document the call.

  2. Answer telephone calls

  3. Scan documents (scan requisitions and worksheets); organize and file test reports and documents, file slides.

  4. Manage inventory: unpack shipments, stock lab supplies.

Accessioning, Specimen Processing and Distribution

  1. Track specimens to receive and send specimens between departments.

  2. Accession, process and distribute patient samples within the laboratory consistent with accuracy and quality assurance goals of the laboratory.

  3. Access and navigate the Pathology Document Control System, Hospital Information System (HIS), and Laboratory Information System (LIS) to accession patient specimens, requesting additional information from appropriate resources.

  4. Assist in Problem solving (duplicate tests, missing samples, incorrect samples, and missing information); call on unacceptable specimens (clotted, hemolyzed, wrong container etc.).

  5. Work with other laboratory personnel to process patient casework with optimal efficiency and accuracy (e.g., basic sample preparation and setup of assays or loading automation lines).

Maintain and Operate Instruments*/Laboratory Support

  1. Perform and document daily maintenance as specified in instrument procedures.

  2. Analyze patient samples as specified in the instrument procedures.

  3. Enter test results into laboratory databases.

  4. Ensure continuous operation by routinely monitoring the status of reagents, parts and supplies.

  5. Monitor error codes and perform basic troubleshooting. Notify a supervisor or senior operator if unable to resolve an instrument problem. Document problems, action taken and outcomes in instrument logbooks.

  6. Operate the dishwasher and autoclave to clean and sterilize laboratory supplies, wash slide cassettes.

  7. Prepare reagents.

  8. Maintain work area in a well-stocked, clean condition.

Perform Testing*

  1. Analyze patient samples (automated or manual) and report test results consistent with accuracy and quality assurance goals of the laboratory.

  2. Perform analysis of quality control material with documentation of completion and of action taken for out-of-range values.

  3. Accurately transfer off-line patient data from worksheets and instrument printouts to the computer

Professional Development

Required Qualifications*

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, and hand pipetting for long periods of time and the ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

Desired Qualifications*

  • A Bachelor or Associate degree with equivalent experience preferred.

  • Reasonable knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in laboratory activities is desirable.

  • Previous experience in performance of standard laboratory procedures is highly desirable.

Work Schedule

This full time, 40 hour position will be on the evening shift, and will include rotating weekends and holidays with other staff.

This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
