Job Summary
The University of Michigan is seeking a Director of Insurance and Claims Administration, reporting to the Assistant Vice President & Treasurer, responsible for developing and implementing strategies to reduce risks associated with university operations and activities, providing continuous support to stakeholders in the identification and selection of techniques to manage risks, managing all property and casualty insurance programs, managing the administration of self-insurance structures including a captive insurance company, managing the integrated disability management and children on campus programs, and representing the University to internal and external groups including underwriters, and support organizations and community members.

Responsibilities*
Establish policies and procedures to manage risks and control losses.
Analyze loss experience across various exposure areas to determine optimal levels of purchased insurance limits, self-insured retentions, and deductibles.
Prepare proposals and manage externally contracted risk management services including insurance brokerage, actuarial, claims administration and information technology.
Understand the University's risks and financial condition as well as its loss prevention, mitigation efforts.
Administer self-insurance funds to ensure appropriate payments and maintain adequacy of reserves to reflect claim trends and exposure levels.
Review and update methodologies for insurance premium and expense allocations to auxiliary units in conjunction with general fund costs.
Make recommendations on indemnification and insurance provisions in university contracts and agreements with third parties; provide interpretation of technical insurance policy language.
Provide oversight of the Children on Campus program, including developing policies and procedures necessary for program administration to limit the potential for adverse events and minimize liability exposure.
Provide oversight to the Work Connections program, customer service objectives and perform statistical analysis of program services; provide summary data and analysis regarding results.
Required Qualifications*
Bachelor's Degree in business administration, a healthcare discipline, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
8+ years of insurance and claims experience including in-house claims management, litigation, loss prevention and insurance negotiation
Knowledge of benefits, insurance, federal and state regulatory compliance

Desired Qualifications*
Experience working in higher education or a similarly complex organization
Strong familiarity with or direct experience in management of a captive insurance company
Experience working in integrated disability programs
Ability to analyze complex proposals, regulations and contracts, maintain efficient and effective risk management control systems and procedures
Work Schedule
This is a full-time position Monday through Friday. As part of the University of Michigan Finance Division's Future of Work initiative, this position may work onsite or hybrid (both onsite work and remotely) based on the business needs of the position.
