Job Summary

Under the guidance of the Managing Director and Senior Director, Campaign Strategy, the Director, Campaign and Institutional Priorities, is responsible for driving Michigan Medicine campaign fundraising strategies throughout the public phase of the campaign and for partnering with Managing Director, Grateful Patient Fundraising (GPF) to play a leading role in fundraising efforts to increase support for Institutional Priorities. The Director is responsible for campaign implementation and for management of strategic and consistent programming for the frontline fundraising teams to ensure Michigan Medicine meets and exceeds its campaign goals. The Director will maintain a personal portfolio of donor prospects for gifts in excess of $1M. Periodic travel and flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays are expected.

Annually, the Michigan Medicine Office of Development raises an average of $200 million in philanthropic gifts which support research, patient care and education. The Office of Development supports a culture of flexibility which includes the possibility of a hybrid work arrangement.

Responsibilities*

Campaign Planning and Execution - 60%

  • During the public phase of the Look to Michigan campaign in coordination with the Senior Director, Campaign Strategy, serve as the development point person for MM, including planning and implementation strategies, to ensure MM meets and exceeds its campaign goals.

  • Oversee logistics, timelines, and other organizational elements.

  • Represent MM at campus level meetings.

  • With Sr. Dir., Development Communications, develop campaign messaging strategies.

  • Lead strategy and planning for campaign milestone events.

  • Manage campaign volunteer leadership, engaging all priority areas of MM.

  • Drive regular reporting to track progress toward goals for key internal and external donors and stakeholders (with Senior Business Analyst)

  • Supervise Principal Gift Strategy (PGS) team to ensure management and strategy around our most highly qualified principal gift prospects and donors, including strategic utilization of MM football suite.

  • Supervise Prospect Development team to drive pipeline building strategies at the major and principal gift levels.

  • With the AVP and Gift Team Leads, ensure proper engagement and involvement of the EVPMA/Dean, Department Chairs, Center/Institute Directors, MM Leadership and faculty in the campaign.

  • With the Office of University Development (OUD) act as the MM point of contact for the Health and Wellness University Initiative team.

  • With OUD, ensure MM is compliant with all University naming guidelines and policies and act as a resource for MM gift officers.

  • In partnership with the Stewardship team, provide oversight of naming opportunities and program valuations, including standards and process for naming recognition, milestone celebrations i.e., dedications, groundbreakings, beam signing, etc.

Institutional Priorities - 40%

The Director will play a leading role as part of a matrixed fundraising team, in efforts to increase support for Institutional Priorities, primarily for capital and other funding needs of strategic and emerging importance to Michigan Medicine. In collaboration with the Managing Director, GPF, play a leading role in developing and implementing the strategy to secure major and principal gifts for current and emerging institutional priorities. Such gifts will include capital, equipment, blended and programmatic gifts.

With matrixed fundraising team:

  • Design and implement a comprehensive multi-year fundraising plan to increase philanthropic support for Institutional Priorities.

  • Create an annual plan for fundraising by working closely in coordination and collaboration with Michigan Medicine leadership, administrative and development support services.

  • Gather data, assess prospects, and develop strategies designed to realize the current and lifetime giving potential of individual prospects.

  • Work with Michigan Medicine leadership to determine Institutional Priorities and make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific medical development and Michigan Medicine needs.

  • Personally maintain a portfolio of approximately 20-40 major, principal, and planned gift prospects, maintaining frequent contact with prospects, university leaders, and volunteers spending approximately 40% of time on direct fundraising efforts.

  • Conduct approximately 25-40 face to face visits with prospects and donors per year and participates in approximately 5-10 solicitations per year.

  • Maintain strong lines of communication with colleagues in other health system and medical school units, the Office of University Development, and appropriate schools and colleges across the University to ensure effective collaboration and synergy in achieving fundraising goals and objectives.

  • Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and other development personnel in identifying referral opportunities and supporting the overall Michigan Medicine campaign goals.

  • Through collegial consultation and cooperation, demonstrate and be a model of collaboration in the development community, while representing Michigan Medicine development values and its unique role at the University of Michigan.

  • Participate in Michigan Medicine Office of Development events as appropriate.

  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • At least 7 years of experience in fundraising, public relations, and/or alumni relations.

  • Ability to exercise a high degree of sound judgment and diplomacy, with a commitment to confidentiality.

  • Progressively responsible development experience in an academic health system setting with a comprehensive development program.

  • Demonstrated success in raising capital, program support and endowment gifts.

  • Available to manage periodic travel and a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, when needed.

  • Proven success working in a multifaceted development environment.

  • Experience working in a complex environment similar to Michigan Medicine.

  • Excellent written and communication skills with an engaging, genuine, and mature personal style.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a proven record of working collaboratively with others is necessary.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's degree.

  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan organization, policies, and procedures.

Work Locations

The onsite location for this position is an office suite at the 777 Building in Ann Arbor, MI. This provides free, on-site parking for staff.

This position will be required to be on campus/in the office three days a week and may be eligible for flexible work opportunities at the discretion of the hiring department. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on the business needs of the hiring department, throughout the course of employment. This position works both onsite and remotely based on the business needs of the unit.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
