Summary

The University of Michigan, seeks a creative, innovative, and thoughtful person to join its Equity, Civil Rights and Title IX Office (ECRT.) The successful candidate's primary responsibilities are to look into allegations of discrimination and harassment, including claims which involve Title VII and American with Disabilities Act. The candidate may also resolve matters where appropriate, including holding educational conversations with individuals and/or units on ECRT matters.

Responsibilities*

70%

  • Review complaints of civil rights discrimination and harassment, including protected class issues, and disability related concerns primarily on issues involving students.

  • Assist in providing supportive measures to individuals involved in matters involving discrimination and/or harassment.

  • Conduct civil rights investigations, including conducting interviews, gathering evidence, and reviewing information.

  • Draft investigation reports and/or resolve matters, as appropriate.

  • Communicate and collaborate with campus partners, parties, and others.

20%

  • Provide training and education on protected class issues, including reporting and resource options.

10%

  • Other duties as assigned such as coordinating and planning events.

  • Participate and collaborate on policy revision.

Required Qualifications*

The preferred candidate must be able to demonstrate the following required competencies:

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Proven track record working with students in a higher education setting

  • Ability to effectively investigate, respond to, and analyze all forms of harassment and discrimination as outlined in university policy

  • Knowledge of experience working with all relevant federal and state civil rights laws, regulations, and guidance

  • Ability to provide support in the implementation of UM policies and procedures related to civil rights compliance

  • Ability to resolve matters promptly and effectively

  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a manner consistent with the university's mission and culture

  • Commitment to work outside of regular business hours on occasion, if needed. This may include: email response, sending outreach materials, etc. on weekends or evenings

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Competence in the area of information technology

Desired Qualifications*

Experience resolving matters through alternative forms of resolution such as: mediation and restorative justice practices
