Responsibilities*

Under physician supervision, coordinates care of acutely ill post-surgical adult patients admitted to the CVICU setting.

  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic tasks for cardiac, vascular, and thoracic procedures, including heart, lung transplantation, and ventricular assist devices.

  • Coordinate care for acutely ill post-surgical patients in the Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU).

  • Collect and present patient histories, diagnostic reports, and interpret tests.

  • Manage pre- and post-surgery CVICU patient

  • Collect and interpret reports from diagnostic lab tests, radiographic procedures, and clinical studies.

  • Order tests and prescribe medications

  • Perform various diagnostic, therapeutic, and minor procedures, based on privileges.

  • Assist in training new residents and APP fellows.

  • Communicate with care teams, maintain accurate documentation, and educate patients and families.

  • Streamline patient transfers and participate in quality assurance and research activities.

  • Participate in quality assurance activities, peer evaluations and support research initiatives involving CVICU and cardiac surgery patients.

  • Attend yearly SIM training on unit for CSU-ALS protocol.

  • Complete admission H&P, inpatient orders, problem lists, daily progress notes, and discharge summaries.

  • Comply with quality, safety standards, and continuous professional development.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of medical principles, practices, standards, and techniques in accordance with Michigan Medicine policies and procedures, Medical Staff Bylaws, and State and Federal laws/regulations.

  • Adhere to Michigan Medicine policies and guidelines

Note: Position requires night/day rotation, with majority of shifts at night. Holiday and weekend shifts required, up to 50% or every other weekend.

Required Qualifications*

PA:

  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.

  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License required.

  • Current DEA registration required.

  • ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center).

NP:

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.

  • Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).

  • Current DEA registration required.

  • ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center)

PA/NP:

  • Independent procedural experience including incision and drainage, suturing, wound debridement.APP experience with procedures such as incision and drainage, suturing, and wound debridement.

NOTE: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.

NOTE: In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

Desired Qualifications*

  • 1+ years of full-time critical care APP experience is preferred.

  • Recent (within the last 5 years) APP experience or knowledge of current medical, surgical, and pharmaceutical treatment modalities of the post-cardiothoracic surgery and critical care population.

  • Recent (within the last 5 years) APP experience with ventricular assist device and heart/lung transplant patients is preferred.

  • Recent (within the last 5 years) APP experience with surgical and bedside procedures.

  • Ability to coordinate clinical care across multiple services and communicate assertively as a patient advocate.

  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to prioritize assignments in a busy work environment.

Work Schedule

Hours: Full-time, 40 hrs/week. Weekend shifts required. Holiday shifts required. Weekend requirement could be as much as 50% or every other.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
