Summary
The Urban Technology Program at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning is hiring a practice track faculty member at the rank of adjunct practice instructor. We are looking for someone with significant professional experience in UX design, UI design, or human-centered design to teach a course in the fall 2024 semester (August 26 - December 23, 2024).
Taubman College's four-year Urban Technology program combines urbanism, technology, and design to help students build the know-how and determination to create digital services that improve urban life for all. The goal of our curriculum is to empower students who are conscientious citizens of the world, possess the knowledge needed to work on grand urban challenges, and recognize their own agency despite and amid the uncertainties of the contemporary world. Cities will be their domain, technology will be an essential skill set, and design will be their practice.
Responsibilities*
During August 2024, engage in conversations with the Urban Technology faculty director and the instructor of the other section to align on course structure and content
Teach the course, late August - mid-December 2024 (in person in Ann Arbor)
Engage in ongoing, paid professional design work outside of the University of Michigan and incorporate real-world experience into the delivery of the course
Provide service to the program (consulting, committees, etc.) commensurate with teaching effort percentage and participate in the ongoing intellectual development of the urban technology degree program
Required Qualifications*
Master's degree or undergraduate degree and professional experience in UX design, UI design, human-centered design, or a related field
Five years of demonstrated and recognized professional work experience
Experience designing, improving, and implementing services in an urban context and for urban audiences, whether in the public or private sector
Familiarity using software including Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Miro
Ability to design and conduct energetic, active, collaborative, hands-on learning experiences
