Job Description:

Job Title: Food Protection Quality Assurance (FPQA) Technician FLSA: Non-Exempt

Location : Hy-Vee Beverage Mfg. Revision Date: 12/2024

General Function:

The individual in this position will be involved with all aspects of Quality and Food Safety to ensure safe and wholesome food for our customers. This individual will work closely with production employees and regulatory staff.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • FPQA Technician can perform independently in plant.

  • Complete daily paperwork and documentation tasks prior to turning into Document Review personnel.

  • Review daily samples of production runs, ensuring proper containers, lids, dating, labels, and product are used. Verify and collect retains for scheduled areas. Verify ingredient and product quality.

  • Monitor GMPs and employee compliance. Verify Safety and Food Safety issues and regulatory compliance are met.

  • Monitor daily allergen sequences and assist production with sequence of production runs.

  • Ensure and troubleshoot daily collection of ATP and/or Allergen swabs when needed.

  • Follow assigned shift duties for daily-required tasks.

  • Arrive to work on time, in proper PPE for scheduled shift.

  • Able to take initiative when issues arise—mislabeled product, condensation, etc.

  • Perform daily verification of CCPs and Quality Audit completion.

  • Monitor Time and Temperatures of products. Report to FPQA management when products deviate or there are quality issues.

  • Coaching and assisting employees not in compliance, in order to maintain GMPs.

  • Perform daily ingredient evaluations (WIP shelf life, etc).

  • Able to place items, areas, equipment, etc. on hold when out of compliance, working to resolve in timely manner following standard operating procedures.

  • Help production/other QCs to prevent deviating when possible.

  • Ensure compliance with plant policies and Federal and State regulations including Good Manufacturing (GMP) and Safe Quality Food (SQF) standards.

  • Training and mentoring new FPQA technicians.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Ability to work under time constraints and be flexible in hours worked.

  • Performs pre-operational sanitation checks on equipment as needed.

  • Performs other job-related duties and special projects as required.

Education/Experience Required to Perform Job:

  • Production and/or food handling experience preferred.

  • Experience in Quality Control helpful.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be physically able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; exert up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Must be able to be on feet (standing and walking) for 8+ hours a day.

  • Visual requirements include vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.

  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Working Conditions:

  • The duties of this position are performed mostly in the production area.

  • Adaptability for changes throughout daily operation.

  • Regularly exposed to loud sounds and distracting noise levels from equipment.
