These positions are represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and are subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.

DEPARTMENT: Planning

HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday; 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM

LOCATION: 4 700 Elmore Rd, Anchorage, AK

Example of Duties

The position is responsible for the performance of professional-level transportation planning work. Duties involve the research and analysis of technical planning issues of both a short and long-term nature, the analysis of public and private development projects, and the preparation of plans. Responsible for the implementation, administration, formulation, and monitoring of the major specialized planning program, Anchorage Metropolitan Area Transportation Solutions (AMATS}, plans and programs to include, but not limited to elements of the Metropolitan Transportation Plan; the Transportation Improvement Program; the Public Participation Plan; as well as assist in grant management as related to the formulation of quarterly and annual reports under the guidance of Transportation Planning MPO Division Manager. Represent the department at the monthly AMATS Meetings and various agency public meetings and perform public speaking in a variety of forums. Prepare draft written reports and studies, help prepare requests for proposals select consultants, and project work programs, and monitor contract compliance. Review/ analyze and prepare written/oral/graphic recommendations on transportation & land use planning proposals.

Possess the ability to multitask to include leading projects and directing the prioritization of work for technical staff; and be self-directed, motivated, and works independently as well as a team member.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent and eight (8) years of professional urban planning experience, which includes one (1) year of urban planning experience with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.

Associate’s Degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Statistics, or a related discipline and six (6) years of professional urban planning experience, which includes one (1) year of urban planning experience with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.

Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Statistics or a related discipline and four (4) years of professional urban planning experience, which includes one (1) year of urban planning experience with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.

Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Statistics or a related discipline and two (2) years of professional urban planning experience, which includes one (1) year of Urban Planning experience with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.

Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License at time of hire.

All required licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference:

Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
