Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.
This position is represented by the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association (APDEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union.

Example of Duties
This is a two-level class series in which candidates with Information Technology education and experience may enter the series at the Data Systems Technician I level and progress to the Data Systems Technician II level with training and experience in the Police Data Systems specialty.
Supplemental Information:
Assist in the administration of application servers, internal and external databases, and network services for the Anchorage Police Department. Advise users on currently available technology at the agency. Coordinate with consultants, administrative staff, employees, other agencies, and vendors to install and configure hardware and software products. Provide user orientation and training on any supported technology. Assist other technicians with standard helpdesk related activities. May be called at any time of day to respond to trouble calls and resolve or coordinate the resolution of problems associated with hardware or applications. Utilize and work with Microsoft Windows workstation and server operating systems, Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft SQL databases, MFPs, desktop/laptop workstations, diagnostic tools for voice/data/equipment cables. Perform other related duties as assigned or required.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and five (5) years of technical experience in Information Technology, or a related field, which included working with clients on the resolution of computer problems and/or the configuration of hardware, software, and network facilities.
OR
Associate’s degree in Computer Science, or a related discipline, and three (3) years of technical experience in Information Technology, or a related field, which included working with clients on the resolution of computer problems and/or the configuration of hardware, software, and network facilities.
OR
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or a related discipline, and one (1) year of technical experience in Information Technology, or a related field, which included working with clients on the resolution of computer problems and/or the configuration of hardware, software, and network facilities
All applicants must possess and/or complete:
Satisfactory drug screening at time of hire.
Satisfactory national criminal background investigation (13 AAC 85.010, and 13 AAC 85.210) and financial review at time of hire.
Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) / National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification within thirty (30) days of hire.
Satisfactory Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check within six (6) months of hire.
Preference:
VMware and NetApp experience/certification
Experience administering Domain Servers, Local Area Networks (LAN), Internal and External databases, and/or network services
Experience using Microsoft Windows workstation and server operating systems, Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Office Suite, and/or Microsoft Exchange
Experience with an OS imaging and software deployment program
Additional Important Information
Preference will be given to Anchorage Police Department (APD) employees. APD employees who are successful in the screening process will be forwarded to the department for consideration prior to any non-APD applicants.
The APD Internal Selection Process will be utilized. The Internal Selection Process includes evaluating and confirming applicant information and developing a ranked list by the following factors:
Oral Board (minimum 60% passing score)
Discipline Review (For internal applicants only).
Secondary Discipline Review will occur at time of transfer. (The list will be re-ranked, if necessary, to account for both new discipline and expired discipline). (For internal applicants only).
The eligibility list for the Data Systems Technician I assignment is good for one (1) year from the date following the conclusion of the selection process, when the Certified Eligibility List is published (for internal applicants only).
Successful applicants will be invited to test. Testing will include satisfactory passing of: Nelson/Denny Comprehension Exam, personal history questionnaire, assessment interview, and an oral board.
Passing results of the Nelson/Denny Reading Comprehension exam are valid for one year from the date of the tests. The test scores/results may be used when applying for other positions within APD. Current APD Employees who have previously passed, are exempt from the Nelson Denny Comprehension Exam.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska Driver's License, and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states, if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug screening prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.
All required certifications and/or licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
Military Service Interview Preference
Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows the full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization, and shows the name, signature, title, and contact information of the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
