DEPARTMENT: Public Transportation

HOURS OF WORK: Hours vary Monday through Sunday between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m.; Shift work based on seniority; May be required to work on non-scheduled days as the need arises.

Example of Duties

Function as a Customer Service Ambassador for the People Mover system by providing safe, efficient, and quality transportation service to customers. Transport customers by operating any type of revenue vehicle during regularly scheduled routes and special service routes while observing safety rules and regulations, State and Municipal laws, and route time schedules. Operate the fare collection equipment, mobile display computers, and head signs. Ensure automatic stop announcement system is working or announce major stops and transfer points in the event of system malfunction to ensure customers are aware of stops along the routes. Assist persons with mobility devices as required and secure mobility devices in accordance with policy. Administer People Mover policy and procedure in special circumstances (e.g., service interruption and emergencies). Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and one (1) year of experience as a licensed motor vehicle operator.

In order to be considered, applicant must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License Class B (or greater) with an unrestricted passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction at the time of application. Applicants with a Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible. If selected for hire, applicant must obtain a valid State of Alaska Commercial Driver' License Class B (or greater) with an unrestricted passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction by the time of hire.

Preferences:

Prefer candidates with excellent customer service skills.

Additional Important Information

Testing Process:

Testing may be as soon as, April 15, 2024. Applicants who are selected for testing may be notified via email the day prior to testing date, time, and location. Applicants who meet the minimum requirements will be eligible to participate in the Bus Operator testing process.

The Five (5) Testing Phases:

1) Phone Interview: Applicants will be asked general customer service-related questions and driving experience. Applicants who successfully pass the preliminary interview will move to the Written Examination Interview.

2) Written Examination: Categories include, but are not limited to public relations, critical thinking, customer service, and teamwork. Applicants who successfully pass the written examination will be forwarded to the preliminary interview phase.

3) Interview: Applicants who successfully pass the preliminary interview will move to the road test phase.

4) Road Test: Applicants who successfully pass the road test will move to the Final Interview phase.

5) Reference Checks: Reference checks will be conducted on the applicants from the

final interview phase. Applicants who successfully complete the reference check phase will be contacted by the Employee Relations Department.

Conditional Offer of Employment:

Applicants who successfully pass all test components may receive a conditional offer of employment pending available positions. Offers of employment are conditional based on meeting the MOA standards for the following screens, checks and examinations: Drug Screen, Functional Capacity Examination, Criminal Background Checks, DMV Driving Record Check, and Medical Examination.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with unrestricted Passenger endorsement with no air brake restriction. Applicants with a Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible. Also, required is the submission of a current copy (dated within 30 days from date requested) of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska driver's license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. The processing fee(s) are the responsibility of the selected applicant.

All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a medical physical and functional capacity examination and will also be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160) and (AS 12.62.400). Accordingly, it will be necessary for the selected applicant to provide certain identification information and be fingerprinted. Fingerprint cards must be dated within 30 days from date requested. The processing fee of $48.25 plus the cost of being fingerprinted (variable) is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be accomplished before beginning work.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the satisfactory review and completion of the Previous Employer Alcohol & Drug Test Information Forms. Names, addresses, and phone numbers for positions that required Department of Transportation testing for the last two years will be required in compliance with § 40.25 and § 382.405(f) and (h).

This offer of employment is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Teamsters, Local 959.

Military Service Interview Preference:

Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
