Job Description
The Human Resources Bureau at the Iowa Department of Transportation is looking for our next HR Generalist intern! This position will get you hands-on experience with a variety of HR tasks and projects while giving you time to learn from our team’s experts. You'll gain knowledge in the area of benefits, employee relations, safety, hiring, and specialized HR related aspects of our agency.
With such a wide variety to learn, we are looking for a student who can commit to at least a year-long internship and who can meet the in-office work hours requirement at our Central Office, located in Ames, Iowa.
During academic semesters, the number of hours worked, and schedule are flexible to accommodate student requirements (classes, clubs, sports, etc.).
Full-time hours are available during any academic break period.
Through this HR Generalist internship, you will gain experience through these different aspects:
Pay period processing and systems, FMLA regulations, retirement, benefits, and new employee onboarding.
Employee investigations.
Safety training and programs for the agency, training distribution, records, monthly safety initiatives, and wellness programs.
Start to end hiring process and recruitment.
Government classification system and processes.
Government compensation strategies and processes.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution.
