Mary Greeley Medical Center EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN in Ames, Iowa

  • Position Summary

  • Under general direction, provides basic and advanced emergency medical care for assessment/evaluation, treatment, stabilization, and transport of the ill and injured for 911 response, inter-facility transfers, event medical support, and disasters. Provides security, emergency/code response, and patient care functions in hospital. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care.

  • The EMT/Basic is responsible for delivering and administering high quality care and transportation to ill and injured persons.

  • The EMT/Basic must demonstrate clinical competency and compassion in providing for physical and emotional needs of patients.

  • Ability to assess patients with medical conditions with findings reflected in the patient record.

  • Implements interventions consistent with protocols and documents response to treatment.

  • Prepares equipment and supplies.

  • Checks medical equipment and supplies on a daily basis.

  • Restocks and cleans unit after each mission.

  • Knowledgeable in the use of radios and communication systems.

  • Operates required vehicle(s) in a safe manner to perform required duties of the position.

  • Participates in staffing special events as required

  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

  • Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):

  • Current certification as Nationally Registered EMT/Basic.

  • De-escalation training prior to performing direct patient care or within 90 days of hire

  • Current AHA Health Care Provider CPR certification.

  • Valid driver’s/Chauffeurs License required.

  • Current Iowa EMT/Basic certification.

  • Must meet MGMC’s Motor Vehicle Safety Standards

  • Must be at least 18 years of age, and be eligible to drive per Iowa state law.

  • Mandatory Reporter training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • An associates degree is preferred.

  • Currently enrolled in a paramedic program.

  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Skill in effective oral and written communication in English.

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic, algebra, statistics, and their applications.

  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

  • Active Listening skills, giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times

  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

  • Ability to manage one’s time effectively.

  • Ability to pursue and foster a sense of team and partnership across all disciplines.
