Job Description:

The Office of Innovation Commercialization (OIC) at Iowa State University is accepting applications for a position of Commercialization Specialist of Animal Health Technologies who will report to the Assistant Director of Business Development. The successful candidate will manage an intellectual property (IP) portfolio; solicit technology invention disclosures and evaluate them for commercial and protection potential; develop plans to protect the IP; cultivate relationships with companies (including startups) most likely to commercialize the ISU technologies; develop and implement effective strategies to market the technologies; and negotiate license agreements.

The Commercialization Specialist of Animal Health Technologies will assist other staff and ISU administration in understanding the technologies, IP protection and commercialization strategies; in monitoring licensee compliance and performance; and in promoting participation in the ISU entrepreneurial ecosystem, including I-Corps and the ISU Startup Factory. This position may be tasked with supervising junior personnel.

The successful candidate will possess the ability to pay close attention to detail, while managing multiple projects and deadlines. The candidate will also need to demonstrate excellent oral and written communications skills, along with the creativity necessary to implement innovative solutions to commercialize technologies.

This position will be hired at a Level I or II, dependent upon related experience.

Example of Duties• Manages assigned technology portfolio.• Develops and utilizes strategies and resources to review disclosed technologies for potential commercialization.• Communicates policies and laws related to intellectual property, conflict of interest, consulting and research contracting, patent, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, tax, contract, and export controls.• Assists in planning, development, and implementation of strategies for marketing.• Determines appropriate industry and companies to target.• Markets to and identify industry contacts.• Directs market technologies.• Consults with counsel to develop and implement strategies for intellectual property protection.• Determines appropriate agreements to utilize in commercializing technology.• Assists in drafting and negotiating agreements.

Level Guidelines for CSI• Individual contributor position with developing professional and/or technical skills working under immediate to general supervision• Grasps professional-level knowledge and concepts of field while working in a progressive learning mode• Works on problems and issues of somewhat limited scope• Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data for which answers are available or can be obtained• Responds to inquiries and issues, escalating to manager or higher level workers as appropriate• May lead projects of limited scope and complexity• May provide guidance to students

Level Guidelines for a CSII• Intermediate-level position with solid professional and/or technical skills working under general supervision to achieve goals• Applies broad, working knowledge of the principles of the field to moderately complex, difficult, and varied problems and issues• Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action and resolve problems• Responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests• May provide training and/or direction to lower-level staff• May lead projects of moderate scope and complexity• Provides guidance to students
