County of Blair Head Groundskeeper in Altoona, Pennsylvania
With minimal direct supervision, cares for and maintains buildings, trails, and grounds at Valley View Park on a seasonal basis so that each is in a neat, attractive, and safe condition. Oversees assignments, schedule, and performance of a seasonal, part-time employee. Minimus 1 year's hands-on experience in grounds keeping, landscaping, construction work, maintenance, and/or directly related field. Must also have supervisory skills and experience.
- Supervises, schedules, and trains assigned personnel.
- Performs duties to ensure upkeep and appearance of trails and grounds at Valley View Park.
- Implements routine maintenance of grounds.
- Mows grass. Manages trimmings according to location and quantity. Applies mulch, fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides. Undertakes seeding, aeration, thatching, pest removal as necessary.
- Readies trails for warm-weather use, clears debris, defines edges, lays walkway material, etc.
- Prunes, trims trees, and shrubs. Picks up trimmings, and gathers droppings on a periodic basis.
- Tends to planting beds and items within. Irrigates. Prevents and removes weeds.
- Keeps grounds free of litter. Empties trash receptacles; replaces liners; rinses as needed.
- Operates and maintains inventory of equipment in safe manner and excellent working condition.
- Maintains reports on chemical storage and use.
- Performs duties to ensure upkeep and appearance of buildings at Valley View Park.
- Implements routine maintenance of buildings.
- Cleans restrooms. Clears toilet or sink clogs. Ensures adequate supply of soap and paper products.
- Examines facilities on a regular basis for purposes of preventive maintenance and safety inspections. Troubleshoots minor maintenance problems involving carpentry; cement masonry; electrical, structural, plumbing, or equipment repair or replacement. Reports mechanical malfunctions to appropriate party for action. Reports and/or resolves unsafe conditions.
- Carries out preventive maintenance such as basic rough and finish carpentry, caulking, basic cement masonry, drywall, painting, patching roofs or walls, repairing carpet, replacing glass.
- Replaces batteries and light bulbs. Repairs and replaces door knobs or locks, cabinet/desk/closet closures, or door hinges.
- Assembles, moves, or repairs playground equipment. Moves and sets up tables and chairs for pavilion events. Runs cables as necessary.
- Establishes standards and specifications for duties performed, equipment and materials use, as well as equipment and materials purchase.
- Facilitates routine maintenance of equipment (e.g., oil changes, tune-ups, lubrication, tire pressure checks).
- Uses variety of hand tools and power tools/equipment to perform essential duties. Operates vehicle.
- Builds and improves relationships with potential and existing customers.
- Maintains consistent, regular presence at work site(s).
- Performs other duties as assigned or directed.
Requirements:
- Holds high school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of one year's hands-on work experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, construction work, maintenance, or other directly related field
- Supervisory skills
- Knowledge of a variety of building maintenance procedures and techniques; knowledge of machinery, equipment, and tools necessary for maintenance and repair of hard and soft surfaces
- Works independently with minimal direct supervision.
- Works collaboratively with public works director, assistant highway superintendent, and facilities maintenance coordinator to provide uniform leadership.
- Demonstrated interpersonal relations and communications skills
- Fluency in English sufficient to perform essential functions of position
- Math skills sufficient to calculate payroll, invoice figures, proportions, percentages, and area
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Keen attention to details, due diligence initiative, and pride in work done well
