JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

As an Intern in Penn State’s Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DDAR), you can play an integral role in one of the most respected and successful fundraising operations in the country. Penn State is one of only a dozen public institutions nationwide to complete a $2 billion fundraising campaign, and our alumni association is the largest dues-paying organization of its kind in the world. This success depends not only on our strong institutional culture of philanthropy but also upon the nearly 600 DDAR staff members whose professionalism and expertise set the standard in the field.

The DDAR internship is a 40 hours-a-week, paid position, a full-time commitment. With Penn State coming off of an ambitious capital campaign, interns can expect meaningful projects within a development unit, donor and senior leadership interaction, emphasis on personal and career skill development. This is an ideal experience for those seeking exposure to a career in philanthropy. Prior experience with philanthropy is not required, but candidates should possess exceptional interpersonal skills, a strong work ethic, and a desire to learn and contribute to Penn State’s mission. Candidates should possess the skills required to interact and build relationships with the diverse internal and external stakeholders that comprise the Penn State community.

The Pennsylvania State University is committed to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and sustainability in all of its forms. We embrace individual uniqueness, foster a culture of inclusion and belonging, leverage the educational and institutional benefits of diversity in our student body and broader communities, and engage all individuals to help them thrive. These principles, which are core to our public service mission and vital to our success as a world-class university, will be foundational to the 2024 DDAR Summer Internship Program and our cohort of interns.

Applications will be accepted until January 2, 2024. If selected to move on, first-round interviews will be held in late January 2024. Second-round interviews will be held in the month of February. All applicants will be notified of final decisions by March 1, 2024. The eleven-week program will begin on May 13, 2024 and conclude on July 26, 2024.

Intern(s) placed at the Altoona development office will be required to travel between Altoona and University Park at least once a week. Travel expenses may be reimbursed.

After navigating to the job posting by searching on psu.jobs, you will be prompted to complete the application and submit your resume and a cover letter.

Preference will be given to Penn State juniors, seniors, and graduate students. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Cover letters should address your commitment to service, interest in philanthropy, and how the internship would be beneficial to your career aspirations. Relevant questions to consider in crafting the cover letter may include:

  • What compelled you to apply for this internship?

  • Describe your past volunteer service and how it’s influenced your personal values and professional ambitions.

  • What do you hope to gain from the internship program?

  • What strengths can you offer to Penn State’s Division of Development & Alumni Relations?

Do not feel compelled to answer every question; address what will best help the selection committee learn what’s most relevant about your interest in the program and what you think you can bring to it.
