What is it that we do at Colonial Pipeline Company?

Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day. Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system. Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.

About the Solutions Architect Position

As a Solutions Architect, you will guide the development of a portfolio of solutions, aligned with the product-centric operating model, to meet business needs and objectives. Solutions can include projects and products, systems (including applications, technologies, processes, and information), shared infrastructure services, and shared application services. The Solutions Architect will provide the necessary leadership, analysis, and design tasks related to support the development of technology solutions to ensure that solutions meet business needs and align with architectural governance and standards. This position is a critical member of the Architecture Team working collaboratively across Technology and Business Units to enable CPC business functions through technology.

What You Get to Do:

  • Translate business and technical requirements into an architectural blueprint to achieve business objectives and documents all solution architecture design and analysis work.

  • Lead evaluation, design, and analysis for the implementation of a solutions architecture across a group of specific business applications or technologies based on enterprise business strategy, business capabilities, value-streams, business requirements and enterprise standards.

  • Manage and develop the architecture for a broader scope of projects, products, or initiatives.

  • Develop a roadmap for the evolution of the enterprise solution portfolio from current to future state, as defined by the solutions architecture.

  • Act as a consultant on a broad range of technologies, platforms, and vendor offerings to drive targeted business outcomes.

  • Provide feedback/assessments on ARB presentations to delivery leads, based upon subject matter expertise.

  • Provides deliverable like standard definitions, reference models and architecture designs to support architectural governance to assess the impact of new and ongoing technology investment on the business and technology estate.

  • Through a community of practice (CoP), guides and helps delivery teams and product owners to align with the overall enterprise architecture governance and assurance.

  • Monitor the current-state technology product portfolio to identify deficiencies through aging of the technologies used by application(s) or misalignment with business requirements.

  • Support product managers in end-of-life product decisions to maintain, refresh or retire services or systems, including applications, technologies, processes, and information.

  • Analyze the technology industry, competitors, and market trends, and determines their potential implications for a given solution.

  • Support company transformational initiatives such as CMP, SCADA Modernization, and the Cloud Data First initiative through the definition of technical standards, the establishment of lifecycle management recommendations, the evaluation of technology options, the production of blueprints and designs, etc.

  • Maintain awareness of company and government safety and security regulations and policies, fostering a high regard for the safety of company employees and assets, the public, and the environment.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information management, engineering, business administration, or related field from an accredited college or university; will consider a combination of experience and/or education.

  • Ideally, 10+ years of relevant, progressive advancement encompassing multiple technology disciplines (for example, application development, product management, business analysis) and/or across multiple product lines.

  • Ideally, 6+ years of direct experience in an Architecture role.

  • Experience with digital transformation and change management.

  • Understands the concepts of business goals, objectives and business outcomes, business capabilities, value-streams, and business processes and their importance in solution architecture.

  • Understands emerging technology trends and disruptions and their practical application to enable new and evolving business and operating models.

  • An understanding of architectural tradeoffs and the ability to communicate and present architectural decisions to all partners.

  • Ability to translate and distill complex technical concepts into easy-to-understand solutions and constructs for a variety of executive, business, and partner audiences.

  • Strong relationship-building skills, fostering an ability to influence without authority.

  • Understanding of financial concepts to support budgeting, cost benefit analysis, and business case development.

  • Curiosity, a love of continual learning, and a fearless approach to asking questions.

  • Recognition and respect for the knowledge and potential contributions from everyone up and down the organization.

  • Excellent time management, documentation, communication, and written skills.

  • Master’s in computer science, information management, engineering, business administration or related field from an accredited college or university.

  • Experience in Oil & Gas industry.

  • Experience in regulated industry.

  • One or more architecture or engineering certifications, such as: TOGAF 9 or above; The Open Group Certified Architect; Professional Cloud Solutions Architect Certification; Google Professional Cloud Architect; solution-specific certifications.

  • Experience or familiarity with both Information (IT) and Operational (OT) technologies. Understanding of the Perdue model, a framework for relationships between industrial control systems and business networks.
