What is it that we do at Colonial Pipeline Company?

Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day. Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system. Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.

About the Manager, Operational Safety Position

The Manager, Operational Safety oversees the development, implementation and effectiveness of Colonial’s operational safety programs, policies, procedures, including the company’s Process Safety Management (PSM) and Safety Management System (SMS) programs. This role is responsible operational safety and PSM training and communications, including lessons learned. The Manager of Operational Safety is also responsible for the monitoring, analyzing, and reporting of safety data and metrics, and for identifying and implementing actions and initiatives to improve safety compliance and performance.

What You Get to Do:

  • Monitor, analyze, and report of safety data and metrics, and for identifying and implementing actions and initiatives to improve operational safety compliance and performance.

  • Responsible for organizational safety audit and inspection programs, policies, and procedures. Investigation Unit Leader for the company’s Incident Management Team.

  • Support and collaborate with Operations, Technology, and other teams to develop, implement, monitor, and update operational safety and PSM programs.

  • Partner with the Director, Risk and Directors across Operations to conduct effective operational safety risk assessments and to identify, eliminate or mitigate operational safety risks.

  • Implement and administer effective PSM, Risk Management Plan (RMP), Management of Change (MOC), and Safety Assurance programs. Responsible for maintaining PSM, MOC and SMS written program manuals and other governance documents, procedures, and training materials.

  • Responsible for the investigation and analysis of operational safety and PSM incidents and near miss events; and accountable for the effectiveness of action plans resulting from investigations.

  • Responsible for the effective administration and facilitation of the company’s Safety Management System (SMS) programs.

  • Responsible for the company’s incident investigation and analysis and the MOC process.

  • Responsible for measuring enterprise safety performance and for developing action plans as needed to improve performance results.

  • Responsible for the Operational Safety Team’s performance results including execution of effective audits, assessments, and inspections.

  • What You Bring to the Table:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Risk Management, or related field of study from an accredited college or university; will consider a combination of experience and/or education.

  • Ideally, 5+ years of pipeline (or similar industry) operations experience, in addition approximately 2+ years of supervisory experience.

  • Ideally, 3+ years of experience developing, implementing, evaluating, and/or administering operational and/or safety management programs.

  • Preferred certifications include Process Safety Management (PSM), Safety Management System (SMS), or similar operational safety professional certification.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive documents and personnel information.

Physical Requirements & Work Conditions:

Work will occasionally require exposure to weather or outside environmental conditions to inspect, audit or validate processes and procedures or respond to health and safety situations. The person in this position needs to move about in office and field environments to equipment, storage, machinery, etc. Physical ability to respond to emergency situations.
