What is it that we do at Colonial Pipeline Company?

Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day. Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system. Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.

About the Excise Tax Manager Position

As the Excise Tax Manager, you are responsible for the management of fuel and excise tax licensing, reporting, and compliance obligations for the company and its affiliates. The Excise Tax Manager works closely with the accounting team on closing processes including reconciliation and analysis of fuel and excise tax accounts to ensure accurate presentation in the financial statements. The Excise Tax Manager oversees vendor relationships to ensure performance standards are met. Drives efficiencies through continuous process improvement. The Excise Tax Manager is responsible for communicating results of their research on federal, state, and local excise tax issues and their implications for the company and its affiliates to the Director of Tax.

What You Get to Do:

  • Manage the motor fuels compliance process through a co-sourcing arrangement.

  • Advise the Director of Tax on federal, state, and local fuel tax laws as well as the impact of new tax legislation on the company and its affiliates.

  • Assist with shipper verification and reviews monthly invoices for accuracy of tax items while identifying and implementing solutions to mitigate excise tax risks.

  • Leverage outside tax consultants in structuring new growth opportunities to maximize excise tax efficiencies.

  • Document policies and procedures for new growth opportunities.

  • Manage federal and state fuel and excise tax audits for the company and its affiliates to achieve desired outcomes.

  • Develop a network of relationships with state and local tax authorities and external business partners to facilitate resolution of business compliance issues.

  • Provide cross-functional assistance to ad valorem and sales tax compliance to ensure timely and accurate reporting.

  • Promote innovation and continuous process improvement through effective and efficient use of data and technology.

  • Assist Director of Tax with special projects.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or other related field of study from an accredited college or university; will consider a combination of experience and/or education.

  • Ideally 5+ years of experience in federal and state fuel and excise taxes.

  • Experience with AvaTax Excise and Avalara Returns Excise software services.

  • Commitment to consistently adhere to policies and procedures and be a positive example for others by demonstrating the Company’s core values of Respect, Accountability, Innovation, Safety, and Excellence in completing work assignments.

  • Self-motivated, have phenomenal work ethic and looking for the right company to support your growth.
