Job Summary & General Information

Under general direction of the Recreation Supervisor II or their designee, performs a variety of routine and complex transportation work in driving a van, bus or other vehicle and coordinates transportation plans in support of the City of Alpharetta Adult Activity Center Programs.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. In addition, specifications are intended to outline the minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the class and do not necessarily convey the qualifications of incumbents within the position.

  • Operates passenger bus or van to safely transport adult citizens to designated locations.

  • Operates passenger buses or vans with handicap lifts, in a safe manner.

  • Transports adult citizens on scheduled outings and field trips; acts as the trip escort, taking adult citizens to events, meals, etc. and handling money, tickets and other field trip related duties and responsibilities.

  • Operates passenger buses and/or vans safely and observes legal and defensive driving techniques.

  • Assists passengers as needed in getting on and off the bus or van; provides information and assistance as requested.

  • Assures proper operation of safety equipment; refuels vehicle, performs vehicle inspections before each trip; and reports malfunctions according to established procedures.

  • Maintains the vehicles in a clean/sanitize condition including taking it to be washed and cleaning the interior as necessary.

  • Maintains routine records related to vehicle operations and servicing.

  • Compiles with traffic regulations to operate vehicles in a safe and courteous manner.

  • Follows City policy guidelines should an accident occur.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Operation of a passenger bus and van.

  • Traffic signs, signals and applicable driving safety precautions and procedures.

  • Geographic locations and streets within the City of Alpharetta and the surrounding areas.

  • Applicable City policies, procedures, and structure.

  • Pertinent safety laws, codes and regulations for federal, state and local agencies.

  • Safety principles and practices, including first aid and adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors and City staff.

Ability to:

  • Operate a motor vehicle safely.

  • Assists passengers getting on and off the bus and van.

  • Operate a handicap lift.

  • Maintain routine records related to bus and van operation and servicing.

  • Assure proper operation of safety equipment and report malfunctions.

  • Meet schedules and time lines.

  • Read a map and locate destinations.

  • Collect and calculate funds for trips, etc.

  • Exhibit a courteous, positive and friendly manner with passengers.

  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work and contribute to a cooperative team effort.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job qualifies.

  • High School diploma or GED equivalency.

  • Two years’ experience in driving buses or vans in transporting passengers and/or custodial or facilities maintenance and repair work.

  • Possession of or ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications.

  • Must be willing to work varying hours, including evenings, weekends and/or holidays assigned.

  • Possession of a valid Georgia State driver’s license with CDL endorsement.

Physical Demands

Physical: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk; and hear. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl. The employee is required to sit for an extended period of time while driving. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally life and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read printed documents and to operate equipment.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
