Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day. Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system. Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.

About the Associate Pipeline Controller Position

The Associate Pipeline Controller is a Trainee opportunity with on-the-job training as well as classroom and simulation learning. As an Associate Pipeline Controller, you will be monitoring and controlling the flow of product across the system and ensure that related tasks and activities are completed safely while maintaining system integrity. You are someone who has interpersonal skills, is detail oriented, a multi-tasker, high tolerance for stress, customer focused, analytical, problem solver, and can take initiative. Testing and demonstrated skills proficiency are required at designated intervals to ensure that the required duties can be performed safely and effectively.

What You Get to Do:

  • Apply standard methods of operating, operations philosophies, and tools to ensure control processes are conducted consistently.

  • Contribute to process improvements and troubleshoot issues.

  • Proactively monitor and control pipeline pressures and flow rates by remotely starting and stopping appropriate pumping units.

  • Read, comprehend, and evaluate graphic schedules to maintain accurate movements and deliveries of product; routinely provides constructive feedback to Schedulers.

  • Monitor and correctly respond to alarms caused by normal, abnormal, and emergency conditions.

  • Execute documented procedural action plans promptly to prevent or minimize emergencies.

  • Accesses policies and procedures on-line as necessary to ensure accurate execution of all operating conditions.

  • Assimilates revisions in procedures and new information to maintain effective operations.

  • Promote and encourage achievement of Control Center goals.

  • Act timely to abort any action that is believed to be unsafe in the operation of the pipeline.

  • Monitors self and others to control the work environment to remove distractions or any occurrence that could impede the safe and effective functioning of the desk.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree from an accredited institution.

  • Valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.

  • *Live within a 60-minute commute of the work location (See PHMA’s Control Room Management Rule at the end of posting details).

  • Ability to work on rotating 12-hour shifts and expected to be available for a variety of shifts. The nature of the work requires availability for overtime.

  • Ability to acquire and maintain Operator Qualifications

  • Gift for situational awareness.

  • Ability to work extended hours, holidays, and/or weekends as required.

Physical Requirements & Work Conditions:

Controllers must be well rested and alert at the start of and for the duration of their entire 12-hour shift. Must be able to work in normal office lighting settings. Normal color recognition and identification. Digital dexterity for operation of calculator, PC keyboard and mouse. Hearing in the normal range. Controllers must be able to sit for extended periods. Speak at a normal voice range. Write legibly. Ability to read 11 font on a computer monitor for extended periods. Work alone at a computer console for most of the workday. Perform detailed, regimented tasks and sustain concentration under stressful situations. Perform a variety of tasks at once. Maintain shift lengths and schedule rotations as established and coordinated by management to ensure off-duty time sufficient to achieve eight hours of continuous sleep.

This is a Department of Transportation (DOT) covered job and is subject to all applicable regulatory requirements such as testing for the presence of prohibited drugs and alcohol as defined under 49 CFR Part 199 as a condition of employment, to include pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable cause/suspicion and fit for duty testing.

*Colonial adheres to PHMSA's (Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration) Control Room Management Rule, and as such, incumbents in this role must live within 60 minutes (90 minutes for previously grandfathered employees) from their designated work location and notify management of any changes to their home address while in this role. This is for reasons of Fatigue Management Requirements. This includes acquiring and retain necessary training to be fully educated on Company fatigue mitigation strategies and how off-duty activities contribute to fatigue. Acquire and retain necessary training to recognize the effects of fatigue. Be aware of and comply with the mandated maximum limit of controller hours-of-service.
