34001BRReq No.:34001BRJob Description and Qualifications: Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a world-leading Fortune 500 industrial gases company, has an immediate opening for a Research Engineer in the Standard Adsorbents Technology team at our Corporate Headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Standard Adsorbents Technology provides expertise in the fields of adsorption and catalysis, including the development of innovative technologies to produce industrial gases and to improve the cost competitiveness, efficiency, and overall operability of our plants. The Standard Adsorbents Technology team is aligned with our product lines, which includes onsite gas separation and generation technologies such as oxygen vacuum-swing adsorption (O2 VSA), nitrogen pressure-swing adsorption (N2 PSA), and PRISM® Hydrogen Generator (PHG) units.

This role will focus on adsorption technology development and will provide leadership in adsorption-based process technologies. The candidate will also be responsible for leading design of experiments, safety hazard reviews, method development, and data analysis. The experimental work will include running test units to assess catalyst and adsorbent performance, operating various gas analyzer equipment, and measuring relevant chemical and physical properties. The candidate will require an uncompromising commitment to safety and strong laboratory and communication skills. Experience in adsorption modeling, cycle design and optimization, Aspen steady state modeling, dynamic modeling, heat transfer, reaction kinetics, and combustion is strongly desired.


  • Achieving 100% compliance with all safety requirements

  • Supervising catalyst and adsorption laboratory testing

  • Interpreting, analyzing, and summarizing experimental results

  • Leading catalyst and adsorbent product development projects from concept to commercialization, by building a business case, gathering support, and taking the project through our stage gate process

  • Generating “Blue Ocean” ideas and concepts involving the use of various technologies in new markets or new applications with low competition and/or high profitability

  • Communicating results in written summaries, reports, and presentations

  • Contributing to intellectual property activities, including patent application filing and competitor tracking

  • Interfacing with the Business Development, Product Line, and Operations organizations to facilitate commercialization and start-up of new technologies

  • Working closely with other researchers in a team environment


  • Minimum B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Materials Science. A Ph.D. is strongly preferred

  • Minimum 5 years of work experience is required

  • Prior experience in adsorption fundamentals and cycle development

  • Familiarity with VSA and PSA process design and operations

  • Demonstrated track record of commercializing novel technologies

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and project management skills

  • Ability to contribute in a diverse team environment
