Job Description

Interested in a dynamic and challenging geomatics job assignment with key responsibilities for America's Subway?

Washington Metro is seeking a well-rounded and experienced land survey computer technician to support survey engineering activities, perform survey computations, review property records, as well as draft exhibits involving operational, system construction and joint development projects. Candidates must be proficient at using a variety of state-of-the-art survey instrumentation (e.g. robotic total stations, lidar scanners, and auto levels) and supporting software technologies. Utilizing the same, candidates must be experienced at performing and processing a variety of survey tasks such as horizontal and vertical control surveys, structural as-built surveys and property boundary surveys. Much of this work will be day shift work with occasional night shift and overtime work requirements. A combination of formal education and practical job experience with proficiency in CAD drafting is preferred. CST certification is required. Extensive job experience in lieu of education is acceptable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Associate's Degree in, Geomatics, Geospatial Technology, Surveying, Geography, Mathematics, Science, Engineering, or a related field

  • In lieu of an Associate's Degree, a High School Diploma/GED and two (2) years of Land Surveying/Computer/Field experience, in addition to the experience stated below, will be considered

Experience

  • Four (4) years of Professional Land Surveying experience, to include progressively responsible experience conducting processing and analyzing survey data applicable to geodetic, civil, construction, and/or land surveys using automated survey techniques, survey related computer software, and computer aided drawing. Up to two (2) years as a survey team leader within the total of 4 years of experience.

Certification/Licensure

  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid driver's license issued in the jurisdiction of residence.

  • Certified Survey Technician (CST) by the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) or Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) registration or possess a current surveyor license in the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia.

  • Roadway Worker Protection Certification at Level 2 within 6 months of hire and maintained for the duration of time in the job.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's Degree in, Geomatics, Geospatial Technology, Surveying, Geography, Mathematics, Science, Engineering, or a related field

Ability to perform recurring and/or prolonged bending, reaching, standing, climbing, walking, lifting of objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and occasional lifting of objects weighing up to 80 pounds.

SUMMARY

The Survey Computer requires administrative and technical acumen while providing direct survey support to WMATA end users. The incumbent provides technical guidance in various types of field surveys in the absence of the Survey Party Chief, reduces and compiles survey field notes into final format, prepares as-built reports, various types of CAD drawings, and performs other related duties to support geodetic, civil, and land surveys. The incumbent has latitude for independent judgment and action within established guidelines. The incumbent performs and is assessed on completed assignments that include reports and CAD drawings, daily coordination with Geomatics Engineering management, survey party chiefs and other technical staff, periodic meetings attendance, and the accuracy of computational and CAD drafting deliverables.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides technical guidance in the daily activities of the assigned survey consultants, and other subordinate survey personnel.

  • Provides technical guidance in conventional field and GPS surveys to measure and determine distances, directions, angles, locations, alignment points, coordinates, slopes, etc., using various types of equipment including hand-held electronic data collectors, robotic total station theodolites, digital levels, optical levels, and other accessory equipment such as tapes, rods, chains, thermometers, barometers, compasses, etc., as well as CAD workstations and laptop computers.

  • Compiles and tabulates written and digital survey field notes. Performs advanced calculations using complex surveying and engineering software and peripheral computer equipment. Creates CAD drawings and plan sets using survey data and notes. Maintains survey records, notes, files, worksheets, databases, and related project documents.

  • Operates and ensures the proper maintenance of survey instruments, and other survey equipment and survey vehicles.

  • Maintains digital files on assigned computer equipment to assure use of correct and current data files. Transfer data files between office (i.e., laptop, personal computer) and field (i.e., electronic notebook) equipment, and formats into organized directories on WMATA's WAN.

  • Interfaces with survey equipment vendors and software vendors as necessary in order to resolve equipment interface problems, program deficiencies, and/or to develop new data collection procedures.

  • Reads and interprets plans and specifications. Executes and provides technical guidance in quality assurance survey checks on assigned projects to determine the accuracy of the survey crew's work, and verify measurements prepared by others. Verifies that measurements meet quality assurance standards and are within acceptable limits.

  • Computes and adjusts control surveys using control points established by others who used the Standards and Specifications for Geodetic Control Networks, Federal Geodetic Control Committee (FGCC), September 1984 or latest version, or by using control points established by the survey crew based upon information in this publication.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Advises the incumbent¿s supervising Survey Engineer and/or Geomatics Engineering management of survey related actions that should be recommended to other WMATA engineering and maintenance staff.

  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with WMATA personnel, survey contractors, other individuals, and organizations with whom interface is required.
