Our Mine Environment team is seeking a full-time S oil/Vegetation Scientist Intern – Summer 2025 to work out of our Albuquerque, NM office. This temporary position is seeking individuals currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program.
This internship will be part of the WSP Summer Internship Program. As a summer intern, you have the opportunity to participate in our 12-week program scheduled to start on May 19th, 2025. The individual start date of the internship may be flexible.
Your Impact
Participate in a range of soil and vegetation monitoring projects on reclaimed mine lands and natural areas, including the collection, handling, and shipment of samples of environmental media in compliance with regulatory guidance, characterize soils and mine wastes using standard methods, and oversight of reclamation activities.
Work within field teams ranging between 2 to 10 vegetation ecologists, earth scientists, and/or engineers.
Accurately document (e.g., field forms, field notebooks, daily reports) and verbally communicate site conditions, observations, and activities.
Perform office-based document research and data review, validation, interpretation, and analysis related to soils, terrestrial ecology, and mine closure.
Assist with specialized work plans and technical reports to meet the unique needs of clients.
Work collaboratively with members of the Mine Environment team on mine closure and reclamation projects.
Comply with health and safety protocols in the field and in the office.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are
Required Qualifications
Actively enrolled in an accredited Soil Science, Range Science, Restoration Ecology, Quantitative Ecology, Forestry, or related, Undergraduate program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2025 or later.
Must be 18 years or older.
Demonstrated experience with a variety of environmental sampling techniques, field soil and plant taxonomy, and familiarity with southwestern ecosystems
Manage workflow of complex projects involving the collection and analysis of large amounts of ecological data.
Commitment to scientific integrity.
Complete multiple project assignments while maintaining flexibility to meet cost and schedule objectives.
Effective technical writing and verbal communication skills.
Experience with Enterprise Desktop and Web GIS Systems to develop and manage mobile digital data collection for fieldwork (e.g., ArcGIS Survey123, Collector for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Field Maps, Avenza, etc.) including applications, scripting languages, macros and programming tools for data QA/QC, processing, export, statistical analysis, and visualization such as R, Python, Power Query, Power BI, C#, Excel, MS Access, etc.
Willingness to travel and perform physically demanding field work, sometimes remotely, for environmental sampling, site reconnaissance, and construction oversight projects.
Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to executive projects.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship.
Preferred Qualifications
Actively enrolled in an accredited Soil Science, Range Science, Restoration Ecology, Quantitative Ecology, Forestry, or related, Master’s or PhD program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2025 or later.
A strong quantitative background including experience with statistical analyses and environmental modeling (e.g., Hydrus, UNSAT-H, RUSLE, WEPP).
Experience with quantitative vegetation sampling methods, plant identification, and wetland delineation.
Completed 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER health and safety training and current, valid refresher course.
MSHA surface miner new miner training.
Prior internship and leadership involvement on campus.
