What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team. The selected candidate will be challenged to excel in our environment and become a subject matter "go-to" member of the staff.

  • On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Support and proactively investigate system performance, technical issues, discovery and resolution, system-status monitoring, state of health trending, and analysis.

  • Participate in routine system on-call duties.

  • Support tests and exercises for internal and external clients and users

  • Schedule and support a wide variety of engineering activities (upgrades, preventative maintenance) and ensure all installations of equipment or software are smoothly integrated.

  • Support evaluations and documentation of systems

  • Report system status to site management, Sandia management, and partners

  • Support technical and programmatic reviews with the sponsor and other partner organizations.

  • Act as a liaison between sponsors, community partners, and Sandia

The staff member selected will work as part of a small team of resident engineers in a technical multidisciplinary, high tempo, high personal interaction environment. The team supports the systems 24/7 and are on a rotating on-call schedule. The successful candidate will have opportunities on the job to be trained and become knowledgeable on flight and ground aspects of systems as well as site operations, procedures, and policies.

Relocation to one of the site areas will be required in this role.

Salary Range:

$104,100 - $207,100

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience defined by the following parameters:

  • Associate’s degree plus twelve (12) years of relevant work experience; or

  • A High School Diploma plus sixteen (16) years of relevant work experience.*

  • An active DOE Q or DOD TS and the ability to obtain and maintain an SCI.

*Sandia National Laboratories defines relevant work experience for this role as engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D Systems Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).

  • Experience working with National Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).

  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in diverse teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • Active SCI clearance

  • Experience with a Sandia-developed and fielded remote sensing systems and supporting infrastructure.

  • Experience within the Sandia Advanced Systems Programs Office (ASPO).

  • System administration experience on Sun/Oracle and Systems running RedHat Enterprise Linux.

  • Experience creating and modifying software tools via scripting languages to support routine and novel technical investigations (ex. Python/Perl and Shell scripting).

  • Oracle database experience.

  • Experience generating, modifying, and utilizing procedures needed for real-time testing, problem resolution, software test and checkout, and day-to-day operations.

  • Direct experience working with formal Configuration Management processes (DR, RFC, etc.)

  • Direct experience with data architectures, data quality and data assurance.

  • Interest in business community engagement and potential business development.

About Our Team:

The Advanced Systems Program is responsible for designing, developing, and managing ground systems for real-time national security missions. ASPO is the primary Customer interface and user community interface for these unique systems. We provide the technical design, integration, advisement, and oversight for delivery and mission extension through architecture, system engineering, technical integration and evaluation of systems, and mission system engineering and analysis.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
