Laboratory Manager – Remote Laboratories
Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Job Overview and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will maximize human, equipment and financial resources on a daily basis and ensure that they are utilized appropriately. Suggest new processes and procedures that will increase the market share, profile and profitability of the department and Bureau Veritas. Facilitate the production of high quality defensible data, safely and on time. Ensure methods in use meet current and proposed regulatory guidelines. Organize and direct staff, to maintain a good working environment and ensure continuous improvement in productivity and efficiency.
Primary responsibilities include the following (but are not limited to):
Manage multiple remote client laboratory sites, in conjunction with regional site staff.
Lead and develop staff, including responsibility for hiring justifications, recruitment of new employees, setting objectives, evaluating performance and expectations, coaching and mentoring, working jointly with employees in the development of their career path, and ensuring that adequate training is provided.
Coordinate requests or recommend resource planning, e.g. need for additional staff or equipment.
Develop business and strategic plans with the objective of increasing Bureau Veritas profile in the region and preparing the department for continued growth.
Develop and maintain a safe, high quality, positive work environment for employees.
Develop and nurture ongoing relationship with clients as well as with peers in other internal departments to develop service network.
Understand and ensure compliance to EH&S and OH&S policy and objectives to provide a healthy and safe work environment for employees and clients while ensuring training, audits, inspections, and observations are completed on a regular basis.
Assist with the setup/commissioning of new labs, instrumentation and systems as required.
Ensure that methods are optimized; SOP’s and work instructions are complete, reviewed and updated, along with hazard assessments and critical task analyses in their area.
Maintain and improve quality management systems ensuring that all procedures and processes are maintained; participate in quality audits and ensure findings and corrective actions are completed and closed.
Ensure that analytical instruments and equipment remain calibrated, optimized, and in good repair, including service and replacement programs
Ensure that facilities and vehicles remain in safe working conditions and repaired as required.
Is there a mutual fit? You ideally have:
Post-Secondary Degree or Diploma in related field (i.e. BSc Chemistry, Petroleum/Chemical Technician)
7+ years of experience in commercial or industrial lab environment of which two (2) years are at a leadership level
Uses good judgement, trains and assists in resolution of employee relations issues
Demonstrable ability to assess problems and recommends solutions
Flexible to perform varying duties to accommodate changing priorities
Good time-management, communication, multi-tasking and priority setting skills
Strong computer skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Positive outlook with an ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Works both independently and as part of a team

Experience:
Minimum Education: BSc Chemistry (Preferred)
Minimum Experience: 7 years related field (Preferred)
Minimum 2 years experience in leadership position (Required)
Schedule:
Monday to Friday, 40Hr week
May require flexible workings hours and overtime to meet client or business requirements
Work Conditions:
Ability to travel within Canada, up to 25%, including overnights may be required
Class 5 Valid Drivers Licence, less than 6 demerits
Must be based out of Edmonton, Alberta
