Albany Medical Center Teacher Assistant in Albany, New York

Salary Range: $18.00 - $21.60

Position assists in implementing the curriculum, supervision, and management in a preschool classroom. Position also reflects the mission of Albany Med Kids.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

  • Experience working with young children.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for interacting with each child in the group in a warm, loving way daily.

  • Responsible for assisting the teacher in implementing positive, supportive methods of behavior management to nurture and foster each child’s feelings of confidence, competence, and self-direction.

  • Assist in the preparation of supplies and materials for daily activities.

  • Ensures that the health, welfare and safety of each child in the class are maintained.

  • Immediately reports all accidents involving a child to the teacher, and a member of the administrative team. Accurately records all details of the accident on an incident report, as outlined in Albany Med Kids’ Employee Handbook.

  • Participates in all aspects of custodial care of children as well as classroom.

  • Responsible for each child’s development of self-help skills through adequate supervision and encouraging children to accept gradually more responsibility in the areas such as toilet training, dressing and undressing themselves, washing their own hands and face, and assisting children to develop healthy and socially appropriate behaviors through staff modeling.

  • Assists in daily reports such as: attendance, sign in/out sheets, lunch counts and program highlights.

  • Assists in maintaining the parent classroom boards and other channels of communication with parents.

  • Responsible for clear communication with parents and appropriate notification of administration.

  • Serves as a positive role model for the children and co-workers.

  • Attends and contributes to monthly and weekly staff meetings.

  • Attends workshops, conferences or and in-service training on an annual basis. (15 hours professional training per year as required by NYSOCFS)

Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of NYSOCFS regulations.

  • Must have working knowledge of early childhood development.

  • Ability to organize resources for effective utilization. Able to prioritize tasks and performs work effectively with frequent interruptions.

  • Ability to exercise judgement in the analysis of facts and circumstances to determine actions to be taken in accordance with standard policies and practices.

  • Ability to plan and perform diversified duties working from detailed instructions and under standard procedures.

  • Ability to work and plan with other teachers in a team setting.

Able to withstand some degree of prolonged standing and walking. May involve some lifting of children weighing up to 40lbs
