Information Technology Services (ITS) at the University at Albany seeks applicants for a Research Technology Analyst. The successful candidate works closely with the research community across a wide range of disciplines to deliver analytical and computational IT solutions in a complex, Carnegie 1 research environment. As part of the university's commitment to advancing scholarship and training to the next generation of scientists, the Research Technology Analyst works directly with researchers from pre-grant consultation to managing systems and equipment for ongoing endeavors. They play a critical role in supporting, informing, and promoting IT services throughout the research lifecycle.

The Research Technology Analyst is intellectually curious, creative, and enjoys working with others to identify ways that sophisticated technologies can be used to explore complex problems. They have the knowledge and expertise to balance the needs of individual researchers while addressing security, compliance, and policy requirements in a sophisticated research environment. The successful candidate is comfortable working with interdisciplinary audiences, both independently and as part of a team. Primary Responsibilities:

Managing relationships/advocating on behalf of the research community:

  • Foster and maintain communication with researchers of the University and with others in ITS regarding service planning and delivery.

  • Work with researchers and other technology professionals to address the complex needs of the research enterprise while promoting and maintaining ITS standards and best practices regarding technical architectural, security, policy, and compliance requirements.

  • Coordinate and administer research systems/applications development and account management.

  • Provide subject matter expertise for advanced data analytics/statistics, visualization, and computational technologies for a range of applications in a research setting.

  • Provide and support the development of researchers' technical skill sets.

Delivering analytical and computational IT solutions to the academic and research community:

  • Maintain and support research application hosting.

  • Implement and maintain managed scientific computing environments.

  • Maintain the security posture for assigned systems and applications in accordance with ITS policies, procedures, and industry best practices.

  • Participate in the development and maintenance of research systems standards.

  • Organize and modify research storage requirements.

  • Provide research Linux support.

  • Coordinate with researchers and ITS field support staff to maintain specialized desktop and research lab workstations.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate, as needed, in ITS and campus projects.

  • Be available to provide scheduled support and consultation outside normal business hours, including occasional evenings, holidays, or weekends, within reasonable professional obligation and expectation.

    Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.

  • At least 2 years' experience with the following:

  • Command line interface (CLI)

  • Working with and managing scalable or parallel programming

  • Automating common tasks in Linux using a scripting language such as Bash or Python

  • Experience working with a variety of scientific software packages and environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree from a college or University accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization, preferably in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Quantitative Social Sciences, or related STEM field.

  • Demonstrated understanding of statistical hypothesis testing and experimental design, data visualization techniques and tools. Academic or professional experience using statistical methodologies

  • At least 2 years' experience with the following:

  • -High-performance computing

  • -Basic web-delivered data visualization applications

  • -Facilitating user-based software applications that enable research or instructional activities (e.g., statistical software such as R, Python or commercial software products, and associated data visualization technologies such as GGPlot, GoogleVis, Shiny, Plotly, D3)

  • -Fundamentals of data management, preservation, and reproducibility

Professional Rank and Salary Grade: Senior Programmer/Analyst, SL4; $80,000-85,000.
