Position Overview:

The Registered Nurse will participate as a member of the Residential Team to insure an optimal level of medical and health care for the children at St. Catherine’s.

This full-time OFFICE position is located in Albany, New York. Working with the Pediatric Population; the schedule is Monday-Friday: 8am-4pm -- w/ some flexibility.

Offering a sign-on bonus of $5,000*

Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Treatment of ill children, including referral to emergency room and all other medical consultants. This would include implementation of all physicians’ orders.

  • Plan and implement basic health assessments on all clients.

  • Make daily weekday rounds on their assigned caseload; to include review of medical records in each house and communicate with child care workers regarding client’s care.

  • Maintain complete medical records on all children in the Agency’s care.

  • Assist with Pediatric Clinics weekly, including implementation of medical orders.

  • Conduct health teaching for residential children and their families.

  • Provide training in illness management to non-medical members of the treatment team as appropriate.

  • Develop care plans as needed, congruent with special medical needs of client.

  • Conduct medication reviews including medication changes as prescribed.

  • Interface with the psychiatrist and all members of the treatment team regarding the emotional and mental needs of the clients.

  • Responsible for ordering prescriptions, correct transcription of the order onto the MAR, and communication of medication orders to child care staff.

  • Distribution of home visit medications.

  • Presentation of in-service programs which are developed to meet the needs of the agency’s various programs.

  • Attend treatment reviews of assigned clients.

  • Administer vaccines and immunizations as needed to clients.

  • Enter data into NYS Connections system on a regular basis.

  • Take on-call phone and provide coverage after hours on a rotating basis.

  • Conduct health education training to clients and family members when indicated.

  • Participate in House Management Meetings, Staff Meetings, Team Meetings, Service Plan Reviews and In-Service Trainings.

  • Provide communication to Nursing staff and supervisor regarding specific medical changes and status of clients which occur during the hours that the nurse is on duty.

  • Participate in the orientation of newly hired Nursing Staff.

  • Assume other general Nursing duties as assigned.

  • Cross train in Day Treatment Program.

  • Serve on committees as desired or requested by the Director.

  • Additional position-related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director.

Organizational Relationships:

  • This position reports directly to the Director of Nursing (DON). The RN acts as a liaison between internal and external medical service consultants, and agency program staff.

  • The RN participates in orientation and professional training pertinent to position and is familiar and complies with guidelines, policies and procedures as outlined in the Agency’s manual.

  • The RN represents the medical department at pertinent treatment reviews, special meetings, or assigned agency committees, and participates in regular meetings with supervisor.

Position Specifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred; Associates in Nursing considered, with RN license.

  • Current and unencumbered New York State RN licensure, required.

  • Experience in pediatric and psychiatric nursing with children who exhibit significant emotional, behavioral and interpersonal challenges, preferred.

  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification.

  • Experience in the use of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI).

  • Clean and valid NYS driver’s license, required. Must be licensed for at least one (1) year.

  • Previous experience working in a non-profit human services agency is a plus!

  • Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to build strong working relationships with regulatory bodies.

  • Proficiency in various computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel), Google Business Workspace Suite, and secure Internet practices.

  • Experience with AWARDS and NYS Connections is a highly beneficial.

  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times, stressful environment.

  • Willingness to work in close proximity with the clients we serve.

  • Must have the ability to pass required pre-employment background checks, including fingerprinting.

Essential Functions:

  • Mobility in terms of ability to make visits to group homes and residence, for the purpose of all medical assessment and implementation of their medical needs. In addition, site visits are required for the purpose of child care teaching and treatment reviews.

  • Ability to maintain up to date information regarding standards and mandates set by St. Catherine’s Center for Children, the New York State Education Department, the New York State Office of Mental Health, the New York State Office of Child and Family Services, and other regulatory bodies.

  • Must be able to perform well under crisis conditions, with the capacity to carry out agency approved restraint procedures and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) strategies.

  • Ability to assess and implement health care needs for all children at St. Catherine’s, including both physical and developmental.

  • Emotional aptitude to meet the medical and psychological needs of St. Catherine’s population under high-pressured circumstances.

  • Ability to understand, communicate, represent and carry out the mission, values, philosophy and policies of St. Catherine’s Center for Children.

  • The ability to climb stairs, sit or stand for long periods of time.

  • Ability to organize and effectively manage, in a timely fashion, the varied tasks of the position.

  • Ability and conceptualizations necessary to embrace and work effectively within a therapeutic-based program.

  • Ability to work effectively in a shared decision-making model as a team member, while respecting the roles of others.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and in a family-focused approach with families, welcoming them as part of the Campus Services Community.

  • The ability to establish a respectful relationship with persons served to help them gain skills and confidence, empowering them to solve their own problems.

  • This position will have access to highly sensitive records, with access to client Protected Health Information (PHI), in order to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position. The individual in this role will comprehend and actively institute safeguards to protect client and family confidentiality in all aspects of residential work. Therefore, the ability to meet all HIPAA requirements and maintain strict client confidentiality is essential.
