UAlbany has recently received $75 million from New York State for the Albany Artificial Intelligence Supercomputing Initiative (Albany AI). Through our signature strengths in cybersecurity, climate science, health sciences, and emergency preparedness, UAlbany is uniquely positioned to leverage this computing power to tackle some of society's biggest challenges.

The University at Albany has been conducting a large cluster hire of 26 faculty positions in the broad area of artificial intelligence. These positions span the campus to include eight Schools and Colleges in 20 departments. In addition, recruitment of a Director of the UAlbany Institute for Artificial Intelligence is underway.

The University at Albany, State University of New York, seeks an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in mathematics related to AI and data science. The new hire will be a member of both the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the UAlbany AI Institute (https://www.albany.edu/ai-plus/institute) and will need to provide evidence of expertise in the mathematics of AI and data science. In particular, applicants are expected to have a substantial record of accomplishment in the theoretical aspects of the mentioned fields, commensurate with their current academic rank.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has great strength in all major areas of mathematics. It also has an established MS program in data science with an enrollment of 190 students, and is granting doctoral degrees in the area of data science. Its faculty are supported by multiple grants from federal agencies such as NSF, NSA, and NASA, and its faculty have strong national and international research visibility. Applicants for the Assistant Professor rank must demonstrate a strong promise in research and effort for external funding, while applicants for the Associate/Full Professor rank must already have a strong research record and some significant external funding history.

A candidate considered for the Associate/Full Professor rank is also expected to have some experience working with researchers outside their own departments; this includes interdisciplinary research, joint grants with investigators outside their own departments, and working with AI Institutes or Data Science Centers. Such a candidate is expected to act as a liaison between the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the UAlbany AI Institute, as well as to contribute to integrating the Data Science program and related research of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics into the University's AI Initiative.

A candidate considered for the Assistant Professor rank will be expected to have demonstrated potential to teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to data science and the potential to mentor Master's and doctoral students. A candidate for the Associate/Full Professor rank will be expected to have extensive experience in both teaching undergraduate and graduate courses related to data science and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, or a related field from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization by 5/31/2025. Candidates who will not hold the degree by this date will not be considered.

  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community.

  • Applicants must demonstrate evidence of artificial intelligence in their existing research program.

  • Applicants for the rank of Assistant Professor must demonstrate a record of research through accepted or published papers (can include journal and/or conference papers).

  • Applicants for the rank of Associate/Full Professor must demonstrate an established record of research through accepted and published papers (can include journal and/or conference papers).

  • Applicants for the Assistant Professor rank must address their plan to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of AI and Data Science.

  • Applicants for the rank of Associate/Full Professor must have experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the areas of AI and Data Science.

  • Applicants for Assistant Professor rank must have a demonstrated potential for seeking external funding for their research.

  • Applicants for the rank of Associate/Full Professor must have demonstrated experience in applying for and obtaining external funding.

  • Applicants for the Associate or Full Professor ranks must have a strong record of interdisciplinary research, collaboration, and service.

  • Applicants for the Assistant Professor rank must have a demonstrated potential for interdisciplinary research and collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Applicants for the Associate/Full Professor rank has a record of mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students

  • Applicants for the Assistant Professor rank with two years postdoctoral experience in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, or a related field.

  • Applicants for the Associate/Full Professor rank with a record of institutional and professional service, including experience in working with AI Institutes or Data Science Centers.
