Summary

SUMMARY: The AHD Occupational Therapist plans and administers medically prescribed occupational therapy treatment for patients with mental, physical or emotional disabilities to restore function and to facilitate rehabilitation. Under general supervision, plans, implements, and leads individual and group therapy occupational therapy programs for rehabilitation of patients. The Occupational Therapist tests and evaluates patients' ability to function outside the treatment setting. Performs related duties as required.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: NOTE:The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification, however, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.

  1. Keeps informed of current trends and new developments in the field; reads the professional literature; and participates in professional activities in the field.

  2. Participates in staff conferences, training, and in-service sessions; explaining OT to other disciplines and coordinating programs.

  3. Provides in-service education and serves on hospital committees related to the field of occupational therapy.

  4. Consults and collaborates with other members of the interdisciplinary team regarding the patient's functional capabilities and limitations, care needs, discharge needs, and treatment options.

  5. Interviews patients and administers the appropriate tests and/or evaluations to assess physical and/or psycho-social dysfunction. These evaluations may include but are not limited to: range of motion, muscle testing, sensory integration, perceptual abilities, coordination, activities of daily living, pre-vocational, home evaluation, equipment needs, feeding and pre-feeding evaluations, and interpersonal relationship skills.

  6. Plans an appropriate treatment program utilizing selected methods to achieve the desired treatment objectives and goals for patient rehabilitation. These methods may include but are not limited to: therapeutic exercises and functional activities to promote muscle return, sensory re-education, muscle facilitation, perceptual-motor integration, activities of daily living and transfer training, prosthetic training of the upper extremity, orthotic and adaptive equipment fabrication, and community re-orientation.

  7. Keeps records and prepares reports on patient treatment and progress and coordinates treatment with other services, involved in patient care; confers with the Department Leader regarding progress and problems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education:Possession of a Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree from an approved school of occupational therapy. Minimum Experience:Two years of full-time experience as an occupational therapist in physical disabilities or psycho-social dysfunction. Required Licenses/Certifications:BLS - Basic Life Support Certification issued by the American Heart Association. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies. Required Licenses/Certifications:Valid licensure with the California Board of Occupational Therapy or license applicant.
