OhioMeansJobs Summit County Water Protection Specialist I in Akron, Ohio

This is entry level environmental monitoring, conservation, and public relations work on City watershed properties. An employee in this class patrols watershed properties in order to protect and preserve lands, waters and facilities, and to promote and ensure their safe and proper use. Works under the general supervision of the Water Protection Supervisor with considerable independence in carrying out duties and responsibilities.  

 

Characteristic Work

 

Identifies and monitors potential source water contamination areas within the watershed.  Looks for and investigates hazardous, unlawful, and unauthorized use of watershed property by patrolling both land and water areas, walking boundaries and fences, and making security checks on buildings and equipment.  Makes various postings on properties.  Observes and records reservoir level, temperature and precipitation readings and services instruments.  Checks and investigates reservoir pollution sources and collects and transports samples for laboratory analysis.  Patrols reservoirs in boat.  Patrols shoreline to look for water hazards and environmentally sensitive areas.  Deters problems by establishing good public relations and providing a visible presence.  Writes and files complaint forms, and calls in local law enforcement agencies as necessary.  Assists in promoting community participation in division activities, program planning, and leadership.  Drives to meet with neighborhood agencies, community organizations, school personnel, and local business owners to provide education and information regarding the watershed and related environmental issues.  Documents incidents and writes reports of investigations.  Provides lectures and information to community organizations.  Attends and helps provide in-service and formal training programs.  Performs related work as required.  

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate's degree with coursework in natural resources, environmental science or a closely related field and a minimum of one year of paid experience in conservation, forestry, land management, environmental protection or related work. College coursework may be substituted with paid experience in conservation, forestry, land management or environmental protection work on a year for year basis. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license. Knowledge of natural resource preservation.  Some knowledge of water quality management and techniques used in monitoring and securing property.  Some knowledge of public safety principles and procedures.  Some knowledge of boating safety and operation.  Some knowledge of Ohio wildlife, fish and game, and watercraft laws. Ability to deter incidents by promoting cooperation through courteous, calm and professional contact with the public.  Ability to read and interpret various documents including regulations, codes, and maps.  Ability to write clear, precise and detailed reports.  Ability to communicate with others orally and in writing.  Ability to think and act quickly and appropriately in emergencies.  Ability to operate small watercraft and to swim.  Ability to see objects clearly which are more than 20 feet away.  Ability to read and interpret gauges, meters, and other measurement devices.  Ability to use a computer for research, data entry, and data compilation. Ability to walk on uneven ground. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.  List of essential job functions available upon request.
