Cleveland Clinic Psychiatric Safety Officer in Akron, Ohio

The Psychiatric Safety Officer is responsible for protecting patients, visitors, employees, and hospital property by surrounding behavioral health units and the emergency department. In this role you will engage with patients and promote a safe and therapeutic environment while working with clinical teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Works in collaboration with department staff (e.g. RNs, Sr. Techs, Nurse Techs, Unit Clerks) to protect patients, visitors and employees in 6100/6400 and the emergency department and other areas as assigned.

  • Rounds to provide a "presence" throughout assigned areas. Promptly attends to escalating incidents and proactively identifies issues and acts appropriately to eliminate safety hazards.

  • Assists in re-direction and de-escalation of patient situations. Works to prevent aggressive behavior, seclusion, and restraint by utilizing the least restrictive methods, as indicated by N.A.P.P.I., (Non-Abusive Psychological and Physical Intervention) training.

  • Intervenes in patient, visitor and/or staff confrontations as appropriate using least restrictive methods, as indicated by N.A.P.P.I., (Non-Abusive Psychological and Physical Intervention) training.

  • Assists staff with processing new admissions by assisting with safety search and inventory of belongings.

  • Actively engages patients in therapeutic activities. Exhibits a professional image and demeanor. Utilizes interpersonal skills and customer service abilities to create a positive environment for patients and visitors.

  • Deters vandalism, theft and abuse through routine patrols of 6100 and 6400.

  • Supports and enforces all security policies.

  • Completes required reporting in the Enforsys CAD/RMS system, SERS system and other applicable databases.

  • Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, alarm response, evacuation and internal and external disaster plans.

  • Remains in assigned area and completes all specified duties.

  • The Psych Safety officer is responsible for collection and inventory of the patient valuables on both 6100 and 6400. The valuables will be placed in the patient valuables envelop with the completed form and then locked in the designated location.

  • The Psych Safety officer will also release the patient valuables when the patient is discharged, and will call Security Dispatch to log the transaction. An inventory list will be completed every shift by the safety officer and will be passed on to the incoming shift.

  • The Psych Safety Officer will wand every new admission to 6100 and 6400 or as requested by the staff. This will include belongings and/or the patient as appropriate. When completed this activity must be called in to Dispatch via radio to be logged.

  • The Psych Safety Officers can assist only when requested by the shift lead to complete a check on patients for a security reason and report back with any suspicious activity. When completed this activity must be called in to Dispatch via radio to be logged.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Follows Hospital and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code and display of ID badge, and safety.

  • Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department-specific competencies and requirements.

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED is required.

  • Associate's degree in a related field is preferred.

Certifications:

  • BLS from American Heart Association required within three (3) months of start date.

  • First Aid training completion is required and maintained: will be provided by Cleveland Clinic Akron General in MyLearning systems.

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

  • Ability to successfully complete training as required by the department.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.

  • Completes N.A.P.P.I., (Non-Abusive Psychological and Physical Intervention) training as provided.

Work Experience:

  • Two years of prior experience within a behavioral health facility, corrections facility, healthcare facility or other related experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Meets the Cleveland Clinic Akron General Physical Fitness Standards upon hire and on an annual basis.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
