U.S. Air Force Academy Gardener (Leader/Turf Grass Management Intern) in Air Force Academy, Colorado

Summary About the position: This position will be assigned to the Eisenhower Golf Course, Air Force Academy, Colorado. This position does not include benefits. Responsibilities Works in all areas in the maintenance of the golf course including greens, tees, fairways, roughs, trees, ponds and landscaping. Using knowledge of ideal course conditions, prepares the course for play by completing mowing operations, changing cups, setting tee markers, completes through detailing and course inspection. Helps in scouting, inspections and monitoring turf areas and trees for appearance and condition looking for early signs of stress caused by disease, pest problems or environmental factors. Determines the cause using test equipment and knowledge and makes recommended corrective actions to the supervisor using Integrated Pest Management strategies. Conducts periodic soil and water sampling. Uses pH test kits to determine soil and water pH levels and makes recommendations on appropriate corrective actions to the supervisor. Using soil probes, moisture meters and local knowledge makes daily recommendations on the amount of irrigation needed to maintain the turf in top condition and maintaining excellent playing conditions. Instruct employees on the different methods of hand watering to include, syringing and deep soaking using wetting agents. Operates and makes repairs to the computerized irrigation system to include sprinkler heads, pvc piping, and control systems. Learns the basic operations of the pump station and VFD controls. Learns the basic hydraulic operation of an irrigation system. Participates in the application of fertilizers and soil amendments. Calibrates spreaders and sprayers to ensure an even distribution and accurate application. Performs compatibility test on products prior to mixing combinations for spray operations. Performs maintenance on spray equipment to include, pumps, hoses, nozzles, belts, valves, etc. Completes forms for record keeping and completes all calculations for amounts of products used per thousand square feet. Assist the mechanics in equipment maintenance functions in basic service and care of the equipment. Rebuilds mower cutting units by replacing worn bearings, seals and blades. Sharpens mowers using automatic spin grinders and reassembles the mower cutting units. Adjusts the cut and height of reel mowers to ensure the highest level of quality cut is achieved on a daily basis. Assist in preventative maintenance procedures including oil changes, lubrication servicing air and fuel filters. Leads small groups of employees on duties for course maintenance. Provides leadership and instruction and helps to set the work pace and checks the quality of work to ensure it meets with established objectives. May instruct employees and assist in the training of employees on equipment operations. Performs administrative duties as assigned. Participates in the process of receiving supplies, learns how to complete the required documentation for receiving and record keeping. Learns the process of posting all expenditures to the monthly budget update log. Participates in staff briefings and may lead a training or safety segment during the meetings. Qualifying Experience: Incumbent must be currently enrolled in a Turf Grass Management Program at a university, which will result in a certificate or a 2 or 4-year degree. Applicant must have previous golf maintenance experience and a good knowledge of the game of golf. Applicant must be able to perform spreader and sprayer calibrations and be able to apply fertilizers and chemicals. Applicant must be able to read and communicate effectively in English. Must be able to lead other employees and be skilled in written and oral communications. Must be able to read and interpret irrigation and equipment schematics. Good physical conditioning in needed for extensive walking, bending and stooping. Works outside in all kinds of weather. Must work uncommon tour of duty. Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 75 lbs. A pre-employment physical is required. Position is seasonal March-October. Successful completion of a Tier one background check is required. Must have a valid driver's license. Must have the ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner. Must provide a copy of driving record. This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution. FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
