The Opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for a Controls Engineer within our Transfusion Medicine division based out of Abbott Park, IL.

We are looking for a high-caliber Controls Engineer to provide production support for engineering projects and operations systems. This role involves implementing and maintaining control systems and drawings for Facilities, Utilities, and Equipment (FUE), ensuring the global manufacture of Biologics and Transfusion Instrument test kits meets daily production schedules.

What you’ll work on:

  • PLC Programming: Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix platforms, Siemens controllers.

  • HMI/SCADA Programming and Support.

  • OEE System Programming and Support.

  • Data Historian System Programming and Support.

  • SCARA and Multi-Axis Robot Programming and Support.

  • Instrumentation: Temperature, pressure, level, conductivity, pH, vibration sensors, and other field I/O devices.

  • Manufacturing Networks and Firewalls Support.

  • Plant Drawing and Software Control Programs Management.

  • Validation/Commissioning Controls Strategies Support: For integrated equipment and systems.

  • Installation, Validation, and Start-Up Support: For industrial control systems.

  • Coordination: With internal and external resources to drive innovative technology Proof of Concepts.

  • Electrical Control and Instrumentation System Design Support: For projects.

  • Automation and Controls Scope Development and Management: Based on user requirements.

  • Cost Estimates, Bid Packages, and Equipment Specifications Preparation.

  • Construction Support: For electrical control systems on equipment or manufacturing systems.

  • Project Focus: Facilities, Utilities, and Equipment (FUE) supporting all site manufacturing areas, including fermentation, biologics production, and automated fill/finish of instrument testing products.

  • Production, Process Development, and New Product Introductions Support.

  • Cross-Functional Team Participation.

  • Protocol and Written Reports Review and Approval.

  • Continuous Improvement: Drive continuous improvement of engineering control systems.

  • Technical Reports Preparation: Analysis, recommendations, and presentations reflecting the status and results of projects in progress.

  • Engineering Systems and Procedures Development and Implementation: Ensure compliance with FDA, GMP, CBER, and all other applicable agency regulations.

  • Safety Compliance: Ensure a safe work environment consistent with OSHA requirements and Abbott policies.

  • Relationship Management: Maintain positive and cooperative relationships with site organizations.

Education and Experience You’ll Bring:

Required:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent technical experience.

  • Experience: 5+ years in a manufacturing support role.

  • Regulatory Experience: Experience in FDA-regulated manufacturing, consumer packaged goods, or similar.

  • Validation/Commissioning: Experience with validation or commissioning documentation.

  • Biologics Processing: Experience with biologics processing, filling, and inspection technologies (preferred).

  • Vision and Inspection Systems: Experience with vision and inspection systems or similar technology (preferred).

  • Facilities, Utilities, and Equipment (FUE): Experience with validation/qualification of FUE, including process equipment, automated equipment, and related software systems (strongly preferred).

  • Technical Troubleshooting: Experience with technical troubleshooting and support of both new and aging FUE.

  • Lean Manufacturing: Experience with Lean manufacturing, value stream mapping, and continuous improvement methodologies.

  • People Management: Solid people management and communication skills.

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Base knowledge of GMP, ISO, and CBER regulations.

  • Technology Transfer: Demonstrated success in supporting control technology transfers of new equipment systems into site operations.

  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced, changing environment.

  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at multiple levels in the organization.

  • Multitasking: Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines promptly.

  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational, planning, and follow-up skills, with the ability to hold others accountable.

  • Travel: Ability to travel approximately 10% or less, including internationally.

The base pay for this position is $57,300.00 – $114,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
