The Opportunity:

Reporting directly to the project controls manager, the Project Controls Manager will support project managers in area of cost controlling, variance analysis, forecasting and reporting. Will also be involved in earned value management, change management and risk management. Mentor, coach and train junior and intermediate cost controllers within project team.

WSP supports employees as we all adjust to flexible work arrangements and flexible work locations. The expectation is that new members of the team will be supported to work remotely and in our WSP offices based in Montreal, Toronto or Calgary.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Train junior Cost control staff;

  • Assess program capability to accomplish current and future assigned work; initiate actions as required to meet commitments, project and client deadlines;

  • Assuming responsibility for preparing and assessing the accuracy of all cost control reports;

  • Assisting in presentation of cost control procedures to clients;

  • Monitor the performance of the job versus current forecast by analyzing actual data, reviewing project costs overruns/under runs and producing appropriate reporting for project management;

  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of operational issues and effectively work with and support the project team including assisting with compiling and regularly updating the forecast to complete the project;

  • Ensure approved funding for expenditure, accuracy and capture of all project costs;

  • Define, develop and document multiple dependent or independent budgets;

  • Approve changes to baseline / estimates and new forecasted dates / performance;

  • Timely identification, notification, resolution, and recording of deviations from current plan including items that have potential for future impact within project scope;

  • Convey an understanding of project evolution and serve as a preventative mechanism for unforeseen cost impacts;

  • Plan staffing and project hours to ensure necessary resources are available and appropriately assigned for both approved and proposed work;

  • Ensuring thorough regular periodic reassessment of project scope, cost and schedule for completeness, reflecting the best judgement of the project team and management;

  • Evaluate current status of the project cost, provide most accurate total Project Forecast ensuring inclusion of all cost categories;

  • Identify deliverables, assign budgets and check points to these deliverables, status progress against check / control points, calculate earned hours and progress;

  • Report and graph updates of actual man-hours and costs invoiced, incurred, physical progress, forecast to complete, key and / or critical issues and scheduled achievements relative to the status of the project;

  • Review invoices for correct collection of revenues;

  • Update project information for actual invoices;

  • Manage client expectations and coach others in effective negotiation;

  • Assist with the development of succession plans and participate in HIPO assessment and performance review process;

  • Ensure contractual obligations are being met within assigned budgets;

  • Develop controls to ensure that client and Corporate procedures are being adhered to; active in continuous improvement;

  • Responsible for managing and maintaining management of change process, change orders and change logs;

  • Lead for risk management practice;

  • Support maintenance and development of cost control systems, tools and procedure;

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fiften or more years’ experience in a cost control position;

  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft office programs, especially Excel;

  • Knowledge of InEight, PowerBI and / or P6 would be an asset;

  • Able to learn new programs quickly;

  • Self-starter;

  • Detail oriented;

  • Strong teamwork, problem-solving, organizational and communication skills;

  • Ability to work well under pressure and within tight deadlines;

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve problems.
