SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION

Basic purpose of position: Perform the essential functions required in directing movements of rolling stock to include operation of locomotives. Assemble and disassemble blocks of rail cars according to customer requirements. An associate designated, as a "Lead Switchman" must be qualified to operate locomotives. "Lead Switchman" or "Senior Switchman" have mastered the skills required of a Switchman, Junior Switchman and Apprentice; and is able to perform essentially error-free work without direct supervision.

Expectation: We expect all associates to be committed to a high standard of safety, be willing and able to comply with all safety policies/procedures and willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to the appropriate supervisory personnel. Individuals performing this function must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others.

Responsibilities:

• Perform general railroad switching duties such as: couple and uncouple of cars, operate switches/derails, apply hand brakes, make minor repairs to railcars, including replacement of air hoses and knuckles, etc;

• Judge and control speed of cars, distance of tracks and clearance points to safely move railcars and rolling stock;

• Must have the ability to apply all procedures, rules, and instructions, safely and efficiently, demonstrating professionalism and courtesy at all times and as service demands;

• Ensure compliance with all Company, customer and regulatory agencies at all times;

• Receive and communicate instructions via hand signals, radio, speech and written instructions;

• Perform general maintenance and housekeeping duties as required by site management;

  Additional responsibilities for associates that have met the Qualification and Certification of operating locomotives.

• Qualified associate must be able to perform and document inspections per CFR 229 Locomotive Safety Standards and make repairs, adjustments, keep locomotive cab clean, free of debris, and add fluids to locomotive when required;

• Qualified associates must possess the necessary skill to apply pertinent train handling methods in various grades, train make up, weather conditions, track condition, in order to control in-train forces, locomotive wheels, and speed of train, thereby being able to stop train as necessary by colored aspect of a fixed signal, hand signal, fusee, and/or banner consistent with train handling best practices;

• In certain switching locations, designated by the General Manager of that region, switchmen are required to inspect and repair railcars as part of their essential duties;

  Education Requirements: High School Diploma/GED.

  Experience Requirements: Must possess and demonstrate appropriate mechanical aptitude, as determined by the facility manager, to successfully perform the tasks associated with designated classification.

  Skills, Licenses, Certification, and/or Special Training:

• Qualified associate must meet requirement of CFR 49 part 240 Qualification and Certification of Locomotive Engineer;

• Must maintain a valid state driver's license if required to operate company equipment;

• Meet and maintain all requirements contained in the Conditions of Employment policy;

  Physical, Mental & Sensory Requirements:

• Ability to constantly work in an outdoor environment, exposed to all weather elements, including extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust and noisy conditions;

• Ability to occasionally climb, using various types of ladders, to heights in excess of 16 feet;

• Ability to support owns weight while riding a moving railcar following company operating practices for long periods of time;

• Ability to work in areas with limited lighting;

• Ability to frequently sit/stand for periods up to 4 hours;

• Ability to constantly use bending, squatting, twisting, and walking motions throughout the entire work shift;

• Ability to constantly walk on uneven terrain in all types of weather conditions;

• Must be able to hear, work or safety instructions verbally communicated in a normal speaking voice;

• Must be able to clearly communicate using hand signals, radio, speech and through writing;

• Must possess normal depth perception and have a normal peripheral vision in both eyes;

• Ability to frequently lift, push and pull up to 50 lbs;

• Must be able to work independently;

• Must be able to meet requirement 49 CFR part 240.121 as required for engineer qualification;

• Must be able to properly wear all required Personal Protective Equipment.

  Conditions of Employment: Employment is conditional, based on a medical examination which includes a drug screen, and an examination to verify candidates can safely perform the essential functions of the job. Road & Rail Services requires a post-offer motor vehicle reference check, and background check. Employment and military (if applicable) verification required.
